On that day the people of Illinois will pause to honor each in his or her own way, the personage who bears the blessed name of mother, whether she be still in the land of the living or has passed to that great beyond from whence no messenger ever has re- turned. All of which brings to mind the pleasing fact that Illinois, as a com- monwealth, is one of the greatest mothers in the world. Illinois is mothering more than 4,000 children, in a literal sense and to the fullest ex- tent that the term implies. There are in the various institutions maintained by the state the number of little children mentioned. The motherly ministrations are performed through the Division of Children, the Soldiers' Orphans' home at„ Normal and in other places where Fate has cast the hapless little ones into the lap of the state. Mother like, she is guiding their little feet into useful paths and equipping them for the bat- -tle^oi^ life in- a manner that called forth an eloquent commentary by Governor Small in his biennial mes- sage to the legislature early in Jan- uary. So when, on May 13, you pay tribute to Mother, Illinois will share . the honor 4,000 fold. CAGERS BEAT EVANSTON; LOSE TO GLENCOE BOYS * Playing two fast, snappy games of basketball the light and heavyweight teams of the Wilmette grade schools won a double headed contest from the Central school, Evanston, last week. The heavyweight game was the closest, the local team succeeding in nosing out its rivals by one -point. The final score stood 10 to 9. lhc Wilmette lights rolled up 12 tallies to their opponents 5. Although both teams were in the best of shape for the scraps, and both machines operated without a hitch, the work of Robert Blasdell stands out as the stellar performance. Blas- dell made most of the baskets for the weighty Wilmette team, some of them ooming at the most opportune time.' The first defeat of the season came, to the major Wilmette team when it tackled the hefty Glencoe outfit last Friday. The Wilmette locals were completely outweighed and outclass- ed, for the team that had not lost a game up to that time seemed to have had,an off day and to be a little stale. The defeat of the heavies was made less irksome to Wilmette fans by the manner in which the lightweights kept the Glencoe midgets down to a 10 to 9 score. Coach Todd and his team are now looking forward to participation in the North Shore grade school invita- tion meet which will be held at the Evanston Y. M. C. A. before the end of March. Plan to Take School Boys On Hiking Trip in Europe Boy students at New Trier High school have been offered a remarkable opportunity to "see Europe from afoot" by Prof. E. E. Jones of North- western university who is arranging to take a group of high school boys on a hike through the continent next summer. The party is now 4*eing foriwed and an interesting experience is in store for a number of. students who it is be- lieved will avail themselves of this combined recreational and educational expedition. Launch Building Program At New Trier High School Work was started this week on the first unit of the building enlargment program at New Trier Township High school, when ground was broken for a three-story 12-room addition on the north end of the main school struc- ture. Salmon, Waterton and company of Chicago, are the builders. The improvement was authorized last September when the citizens of the township voted a $500,000 bond is- sue for a proposed plant enlargment program. The addition will be of brick con- struction and will be connected on each floor with the main corridors of the school. The improvement includes a material enlargement of the school mess-hall. Dr. D. H. Cornell Speaks At Y. M. C. A. Lent Meeting Dr. Douglas H. Cornell, pastor of the Glencoe Union church, spoke at the Evanston Central Y. M. C. A Tuesday evening of this week. The team returned minus the title due to one Rockford aggregation which bumped the north shore lads after they had achieved five victories. As a result of the defeat New Trier was prevented from competing in the state high school tournament at Ur- bana this week.
