- Mr. M E. Barker and his daughter Myra are slowly improving.
Mr. W. H. Simons has been confined to the house during the last week.
The village board has been very liberal in fixing the water rate for the school building at $25 per annum; it is a favor that will be appreciated by the school board.
On Sunday last Mrs. Bunkerhoff, soprano soloist of the city, favored the audience at the Congregational church with a few selections, and has consented to sing again tomorrow evening.
The sub-committee on "Finiancial condition of Evanston and Wilmete" held a meeting Wednesday evening and will have a report ready by saturday night to present at the meeting of the entire committee.
The fire department had a trial last Saturday evening about nine o'clock. Some one built a large bonfie on the ball ground and rung the church bell. Inside of ten minutes the boys had a stream on. Considering the fact that most of the members were at a meeting at the village hall, it would be called pretty good for beginners.
There have been special services at the Congregational Church for four evenings this week. The pastor, E. B. Dean, and Rev. H. G. Leonard, of the M. E. [Methodist Episcopal] church, conducted the services Tuesday evening, the other services were led by Rev. Mr. Wiard, a well-known evangelist. The meetings were very successful.
Mrs. M. E. Barker died Tuesday morning of this week, of malignant diptheria, and was buried the same day. Services were held at the residence of Mr. Edwin Drury, conducted by Rev. H. G. Leonard. The above announcement wil be read with sorow by all of Mrs. Barker's friends, and the are many, as she was one who always made friends and not enemies. She was an active member of the Ladies' society and was deeply interested in all charitable works, in fact could always be reckoned on, if there was work of any kind to do. In church and society she will be sadly missed. This is the second death in the family within ten days; Charlie Barker, a lad of fourteen, died last week. The other members of the family, Mr. Baker and the two remaining children, are still very ill, but are expected to recover.
CHURCH SERVCES AT the Methodist church, Rev. H. G. Leonard, pastor; preaching at 10:45 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday-school at 12. Junior league, 3:30 p.m.
At the Congregational church, E. B. Dean, pastor; preaching at 10:45 a.m.and 7:30 p.m. Sunday-school at 12. Endeavor society at 6:30 p.m.
St. Augustine Episcopal church, morning prayer sermon at 11 a.m. Sunday School at 10 a.m.
VILLAGE BOARD The village board of trustees held a meeting last Thursday evening with a fullboard present. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. The resignation of the village engineer was received, and Trustee Drury ordered to bring in a resolution accepting it. A communication from the Evanston Co., putting in a bill of extras amounting to $6,153.89 was received and laid on the table. The usual batch of bills was approved and ordered paid. The report of sewer and water committee on communication of A. J. Howell was received and filed. The matter of specials 11 and 12 was referred to finance committee, to report at the next meeting. Moved by Trustee Taylor that the water rate for the school house on the east side be fixed at $25.00 per annum for the present. The matter of bond for the fire department was laid over till next meeting. Adjourned for two weeks. F. D. Drufy, Clk. [Clerk]
Some crack-brained idiot started the rumor Tuesday that two cases of small-pox had been discovered at Heck Hall and the report seems to have been very generally circulated. OF course there was no truth in the report.
G. B. Miller, the Glencoe druggist was brought before Justice Berry, of Evanston, this week charged with illegal liquor selling. The principal witness for the prosecution was Police Officer Coleman of Glencoe, who testified that he had bought eight bottles of beer at Miller's place. Miller was fined $160, $20 on each count. - Date of Publication
