Ward's Millions to Widow and Daughter

Making a disposition of property estimated at $5,000,000, the will of A. Montgomery Ward, the originator of the mail order business and for half a century one of Chicago's best known merchants, who died December 7 [1913], was probated in the Lake County court Friday or Saturday.
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Ward, the widow, is named as executrix without bond. In the event Mrs. Ward declines to act as executrix and trustee, the instrument names Charles H. Thorne and George A. Thorne, nephews; Attorney George P. Merrick, 1322 Hinman avenue, and the American Trust and Savings Bank executors and trustees. It was declared, however, Mrs. Ward undoubtedly would qualify as executrix and serve as trustee.

Aided Charities in Life
The widow and Miss Marjorie Ward, only child, are left the bulk of the estate. Mr. Ward had given largely to the poor during his life, and other than a contingent bequet the wil makes no provisions for charitable purposes.
Certain blocks of stock in Montgomery Ward & Co. are given to the nephews, William C. Thorne, Charles B. Thorne, James Ward Thorne, George A. Thorne and Robert J. Thorne, who are now in charge of the business of the mail order house. Mrs. Hannah M. Keyser [unclear], a sister living in Philadelphia, is left $35,000.
The daughter, Miss Marjorie Ward, is left the income of life insurance policies, and, after remembering numerous other members of the family, a two-thirds part of the residue of the estate is left to the widow and the remaining one third to Elizabeth J. Ward, trustee, for the benefit of Marjorie Ward for life, with power of testamentary disposition.

Many Relatives Remembered
In case of default of testamentary disposition or default if issue Marjorie Ward, it goest to the trustee for the establishment and maintenantce of a home for worthy poor working girls.

Cora Hans Faurote, niece, Detroit, Michigan, $5,000.
Lester [unclear] Guild, nephew, Hecla, S.D., $5,000.
Julia Guild, niece, Hecla, S.D., $5,000.
Hammond Ward, nephew, Michigan, $5,000.
Mrs. Anna Holst [unclear], sister-in-law, Oak Park, Illinois, $5,000.
Mrs. Cora Ward Hammond, sister, Niles, Michigan, $40,000 in trust.
Mrs. L. E. Brown, sister, Niles, Michigan, [unclear] in trust
Elizabeth Guild, sister, Hecla, S.D., $30,000 in trust
[unclear] Ward, brother, Northville, Michigan, $30,000 in trust
Attorney Merrick declared that no estimate has been made of the stock left to the Thorne nephews in Montgomery Ward & Co.
