Description
Full Text

Charles Robert Pickard, for twenty years deputy clerk of the United States District court in Chicago and a prominent organizer of Liberty loan and "smileage" campaigns in Illinois during the World war, for which he was cited by the treasury department, passed away at his home at 1121 Greenleaf avenue, Saturday, August 7. Death was due to a heart ailment and climaxed a gradual decline in health attributable largely to Mr. Pickard's unceasing activity during the World war period.

Mr. Pickard, familiarly known as "Colonel" among his many friend [sic] in Wilmette and in Illinois political circles, was born in Huntsville, Ala., in 1862. He came to Chicago during the world's fair period and became prominent in business and politics. Among his intimate friends in Illinois politics he numbered Ex-Gov. Frank O. Lowden, Senator Charles S. Deneen, State Senator Thurlow G. Essington and Col. Frank L. Smith, president senatorial nominee whose first gubernatorial campaign Mr. Pickard managed.

Although born and reared in the South, Mr. Pickard was a life-long republican. In his early manhood he served the federal government for the land office, making surveys of the then little known state of Florida, particularly on the west coast.

Mr. Pickard is survived by his widow, a daughter, Margaret of Wilmette, and a son, Charles Robert of Oak Park.

Services were held from St. Simon's Episcopal church, Chicago, and the remains were placed in the family vault at Huntersville, Ala.
