- Interview with Mrs. Esther Dunshee Bower about her experiences in the early years of the village of Wilmette, and her career as a lawyer.
The retired probate lawyer has observed most of the growth of the 87-year-old village since arriving here in 1887 as a member of a pioneer Wilmette family. Her father, the late Edmond P. Dunshee, was a leading public servant in Wilmette at the turn of the century.
She lives at 1100 Forest avenue, Wilmette.
Mrs. Bower's father brought his family to Wilmette from Charles City, Ia., when the population of the village was 700 persons. In 1889, her father, built a house at 1033 Elmwood road in the middle of the woods. Her father died Aug. 17, 1918.
She joined the First Congregational Church in 1893 after having attended it since moving to Wilmette. She and Mrs. Frank Watson, 1341 Chestnut avenue, Wilmette, have been members of the church longer than any current members.
After retiring from law, she was married to Lorin Bower. He died in 1956.
None of her relatives live in the village, but a sister, Miss Marion E. Dunshee of Houston, Tex., is visiting her.
