Mulford, Herbert B. (Died)

Services for Herbert B. Mulford, 97, formerly of Wilmette, were held November 28 at Scott Funeral Chapel in Wilmette. Mr. Mulford, a former Chicago newspaperman and promoter of educational television, died November 24 in Kansas City, Kansas, where he had lived for the last two years.

A graduate of the University of Chicago in 1899, he joined the former Chicago Evening Post as financial editor from 1902 to 1907. In 1907, he became publicity manager for Harris Trust and Savings Bank, and later left the bank to operate a private bond sales firm. He retired in 1929.

During this time, he had served as president of the Wilmette School Board, and as a member of the New Trier Township Board of Education.

His interest in education continued after retirement. In 1953 he founded the Tri-County Educational Television Council, serving schools in Cook, Lake, and DuPage counties. Associated with Channel 11 (WTTW), the council provides instructional programs for school children at home in the classroom.

Mr. Mulford published more than 100 articles on the problems of educational TV, icluding the "Suburban Whirl," a series of articles for TV use in schools.

A member of the Wilmette Historical Commission, he also authored, "Frontiers of Old Wilmette" and "Little Moccasin."

The 61-year resident of Wilmette, was also a member of the Wilmette Civic League, the New Trier Township Tax Committee, the New Trier Orchestral Association.

He aided in the founding of the Wilmette (North Shore) Sunday Evening Club, and was instrumental in the playground movement in Wilmette, and the Wilmette Bowl concerts.

Mr. Mulford is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Waldron of Kansas City, Kansas; two grandchildren; an d several great-grandchildren.
