W i l m e t t e L i f e has been genuinely p r o d i g a l of its space O n e has a v i v i d recollection of new articles and illustrations a s s i s t i n g i n p l a n i n g the erect i o n of A r t h u r H H o w a r d s c h o o l ; of fine p u b l i c i t y o v e r a p e r i o d of seven years, w h e n p u b l i c l y s p o n s o r e d s y m p h o n y concerts for the c o m m u n i t y were first g i v e n at N e w T r i e r H i g h s c h o o l ; of the r e g u l a r d e p a r t m e n t for h i g h s c h o o l n e w s ; of frequent pictures a n d stories i n t e r p r e t i n g N e w T r i e r to its citizens. A n d w h e n we t u r n to the more c o m p l e x phases of civic life as e v i denced b y the vicious t a x tangle in w h i c h we are i n v o l v e d because we have the i l l fortune to be located in graft infested C o o k c o u n t y , one c a n not i m a g i n e finer or m o r e c o n s t r u c t ive assistance than that g i v e n , not only to W i l m e t t e , but to the entire t o w n s h i p . T h e p u b l i c a t i o n last week, at great expense, of the 1936 personal p r o p e r t y t a x rolls was an o u t s t a n d i n g contribution. T h r o u g h o u t a l l this p e r i o d , the paper has g r o w n in size, i n scope and in i m a g i n a t i o n . R e p e a t e d l y it has risen to the hope that some m o v e ment m i g h t , indeed, be the one great I chance w h e r e i n l a y possibilities of g r e a t e r civic consciousness. Even w h e n some of these have themselves p r o v e d reeds a n d have not h e l d up under the s t r a i n of responsibilities, W i l m e t t e L i f e at least has given them their chance. S o m e of these endeavors were s u p p o r t e d w h e n the chance d i d not seem g o o d . O f this type an o u t s t a n d i n g example has been the H a r m o n y c o n v e n t i o n . A s R i p V a n W i n k l e said, after his twenty years' absence, "Here's to y o u r h e a l t h a n d to y o u r f a m i l y ' s health. M a y you live long and prosper." Mulford, long identified with forward-looking movements in the community, herewith offers his recollections of Wilmette 25 years ago, and longer. By H e r b e r t B . That is a considerable s t r e t c h of t i m e a n d its memories c a r r y one b a c k to m a n y things almost p r i m i t i v e in the life of W i l m e t t e . E a r l y i n the p e r i o d of w h i c h we are t h i n k i n g we fished for frogs, g a t h e r e d s p r i n g flowers a n d o c c a s i o n a l l y k i l l e d snakes i n the area w h i c h n o w d o m i ciles the J u d s o n Stones, the H a y e s M c K i n n e y s , the E . J . M c l l r a i t h s , and other w e l l k n o w n citizens. A t the other end of t o w n , w h i c h we n o w chiefly k n o w as the " L T e r m i n a l " d i s t r i c t , the l i t t l e c o m m u n i t y was named " L l e w e l l y n P a r k . " O n the lake front, i n the p a r k n o w f r o n t i n g the S h a w n e e C o u n t r y c l u b , were s h a c k s of s q u a t t i n g fishermen, and n e a r b y i n the o p e n fields, adjacent to the c r a b - a p p l e o r c h a r d s o n the bluff, w e r e the golf l i n k s . r e c o l l e c t i o n of e a r l y civic W i l m e t t e hinges p r e t t y m u c h on the v e r y m o d est m e t h o d of r e g i s t e r i n g for elections b y s i m p l y s p i k i n g our business cards o n the office spindle of the g e n i a l " c h i e f " of police, w h o later w o u l d w r i t e up the p o l l b o o k s for our convenience. A n d the fine p r a n c i n g draft horses of the fire department i n the M e m o r i a l D a y p a r a d e s . A n d the h o r s e - d r a w n cabs that t o o k us to the o l d c o u n t r y club " f o r m a l s " or to the m i n s t r e l shows put on by a famous "noise c o m m i t t e e . " F e w of the readers of W i l m e t t e L i f e of t o d a y k n e w o l d " J u d g e " R u s h , w h o in the early days a l t e r n a t e d justice court sessions w i t h g e t t i n g out the home paper, then k n o w n as the " L o c a l N e w s . " T h i s g e n e r a l l y was a flimsy four-page affair half filled w i t h "patent" i n s i d e a n d c o n s i d e r a b l y s t r e w n w i t h ads of patent m e d i c i n e s . F r e q u e n t l y a s m a l l squib a d o r n e d the front page a d m o n i s h i n g v i l l a g e r s if they w a n t e d t h e i r pieces i n the paper, by heck, they h a d better get 'em to the office b y T u e s d a y . P r o b a b l y the w r i t e r was o n l y one of the m a n y D r . Gallie, Y o u t h f u l O r a t o r w h o w e r e i m p o r t u n e d b y local leadO n the g o u n d s of the modest i n g citizens to t r y to do s o m e t h i n g c o u n t r y club, t h e n m o r e i n t i m a t e l y about h a v i n g a r e a l newspaper in identified i n the l o c a l h i s t o r y t h r o u g h the village. T h e n a l o n g came a youngb e a r i n g the name of W i l m e t t e ' s first man, w h o , w i t h o u t m a n y c o m p u n c citizens, the O u i l m e t t e f a m i l y , we tions, began to tell M r . R u s h that if were w o n t to have r e a l F o u r t h of he d i d not w a k e up, he w o u l d , himself, J u l y celebrations, w i t h D r . D . M . t a k e the paper a w a y f r o m h i m . T h a t G a l l i e p r o b a b l y d e l i v e r i n g the o r a y o u n g m a n was f r i e n d a n d benefactor t i o n of the day, to be f o l l o w e d b y of a l l W i l m e t t e c o m m u n i t y as well the d i s p l a y of fireworks i n the eveas business life, L l o y d H o l l i s t e r , the ning, w h i c h many of us still think w e l l k n o w n p u b l i s h e r of the paper served for the p a t t e r n later followed today. at D y c h e s t a d i u m . A g r e a t deal of w a t e r has flowed M o r e i n the center of t h i n g s , our under the bridge in the twenty-five years which W i l m e t t e L i E E is now commemorating It seems fitting to pause to consider some of the things accomplished civicly, largely w i t h the aid of this n e w s - m a g a z i n e . " A n i n stitution is the lengthened shadow of a man." W i l m e t t e L i f e seem to much a f o r e r u n n i n g s h a d o w of things accomplish or attempted that one might almost conjecture that freq u e n t l y it set the p a t t e r n to be followed i n action. T h i s w r i t e r has c o n t r i b u t e d m u c h to the columns of the p a p e r on behalf of civic enterprises, a n d f r o m this first h a n d experience w o u l d like to p o i n t out very i m p e r f e c t l y w h a t the s p l e n d i d c o o p e r a t i o n has m e a n t to the c o m munity. F i r s t i n point of t i m e i n this experience, t h o u g h c o n t i n u i n g to the present, w a s the s e r v i c e g i v e n the W i l m e t t e S u n d a y E v e n i n g club, beg i n n i n g , if m e m o r y serves me c o r rectly, in about 1914. M u c h of the success of t h a t u n d e r t a k i n g was d i rectly attributable to friendly publ i c i t y : doubtless F r a n k M c C l u r e has said the same t h i n g on scores of public occasions Recalls W a r A i d W h e n the W o r l d w a r b r o k e out, not o n l y w e r e all the n a t i o n a l m o v e ments sponsored v i t a l l y , but the org a n i z a t i o n of the H o m e G u a r d was m a t e r i a l l y assisted T h i s was foll o w e d b y m u c h fine w o r k to assist those o r g a n i z a t i o n s active i n rehabilitation. Probably the writer never adequately t h a n k e d the publ i c a t i o n for services done in this respect d i r e c t l y for h i m .
