N o r m a n H Copt h o r n e ) , 1183 A s b u r y avenue, H u b b a r d W o o d s , the composer, has r e c e n t l y t a k e n h o n o r s for the second time in a n a t i o n a l m u s i c contest. S h e has been a w a r d e d second h o n o r a b l e m e n t i o n for " V e l vet Shoes," the s o n g w h i c h she e n t e r e d i n the contest s p o n s o r e d by M u P h i E p s i l o n n a t i o n a l m u s i c s o r o r i t y . H e r c o m p o s i t i o n w i l l be h e a r d in C l e v e l a n d next w e e k w h e r e a t h r e e - d a y c o n v e n t i o n of the o r g a n i z a t i o n is to be held. A m o n g the judges in the contest w e r e F r a n k L a F o r g e , the composer, a n d H e r b e r t G o u l d , the baritone. L a s t y e a r , M r s . C o p t h o r n e t i e d f o r first p l a c e a n d r e c e i v e d half of the prize m o n e y i n the c o n test c o n d u c t e d by the N a t i o n a l L e a g u e of A m e r i can P e n W o m e n . " F a i r y of S p r i n g " w a s the title of this c o m p o s i t i o n . R e c e n t l y , M r s . C o p t h o r n e received w o r d that H . T . F i t z s i m o n s , m u s i c p u b l i s h e r s of C h i c a g o , are about to b r i n g out her " M e e t the P r o f e s s o r , " an operetta w r i t t e n for the voices of girls between h i g h s c h o o l a n d college age. S e v e r a l y e a r s ago, w h e n she was d i r e c t o r of music for the C h i l d r e n ' s C i v i c theater i n C h i c a g o , M r s . Copthorne collaborated with M r s . Charlotte C h o r p e n n i n g , the p l a y p r o d u c e r , and w r o t e the i n c i d e n t a l m u s i c for a C h i n e s e pageant, " T h e E m p e r o r ' s N e w C l o t h e s . " P u b l i s h e r s have, since the p r o d u c t i o n of the pageant, w r i t t e n to M r s . C o p t h o r n e for p e r m i s s i o n to use this m u s i c . P r o g r a m s of h e r selections have been g i v e n before s e v e r a l l o c a l g r o u p s i n past m o n t h s . T h i s w i n t e r her m u s i c was p r e s e n t e d for the N a t i o n a l L e a g u e of A m e r i c a n P e n W o m e n a n d for the D a u g h t e r s of 1812; a n d o n l y r e c e n t l y the W i n netka M u s i c club devoted a n afternoon to her compositions. N o r m a C o r d o n ( M r s . R. D . C o r d o n of W i n n e t k a ) sang " R a p t u r e , " " V e l v e t Shoes," "Aspens," "Squeaky S w i n g , " and " W h e n N i g h t C o m e s O n " ; a n d a t r i o c o m p o s e d of M r s . C o p t h o r n e , p i a n i s t ; I r e n e S m i t h , 'cellist, a n d C a r o line H a r n s b e r g e r , v i o l i n i s t , g a v e t w o s t r i n g selections -- " S a t i n S l i p p e r " a n d " S e r e n a d e . " A l o n g w i t h three other A m e r i c a n c o m p o s e r s M r s . C o p t h o r n e appeared at a tea g i v e n at the W h i t e H o u s e , three years ago, by M r s . R o o s e v e l t , a n d the f o l l o w i n g year a p p e a r e d at a s i m i l a r function at the Governor's mansion in Springfield. M r s . C o p t h o r n e , a l t h o u g h she w r i t e s for the p i a n o alone a n d for ensemble p l a y i n g , favors s o n g w r i t i n g , u s u a l l y t a k i n g some p o e m w h i c h p a r t i c u l a r l y s t r i k e s h e r f a n c y to put to m u s i c . S h e has w r i t t e n m u s i c to a p o e m b y E l e a n o r W y l i c , the famous poetess, and for m a n y l i g h t a n d c h a r m i n g verses. A l t o g e t h e r the m u s i c i a n is the c o m p o s e r of o v e r 100 songs a n d t w o operettas. Second honorable mention for her song, "Velvet Shoes," has been awarded Frances Copthorne (Mrs. Norman H. Copthorne) of Hubbard Woods by Mu Phi Epsilon, the national music sorority, 'which has been conducting a national contest for musicians this spring. M r . G a s s l a n d e r shows a series of four p a i n t i n g s in t e m p e r a a n d four in t r a n s p a r e n t w a t e r c o l o r . The group i n tempera or opaque water color, e n t i t l e d " B o t a n i c a l H o l i d a y , " is the b e g i n n i n g of a large series of studies in c o l o r w h i c h M r . G a s s l a n d e r l a t e r p l a n s t o p u b l i s h . E a c h p a i n t i n g is i n itself an abstract c o m p o s i t i o n of c h a r m . H e r e the desired end is f o r m , o r a r r a n g e m e n t of s u c h art elements as line, mass, c o l o r a n d t e x t u r e so as to produce a r h y t h m i c and unified c o m p o s i t i o n . T h i s series in c a r n i v a l c o l o r s w i t h w a r m reds, oranges, y e l l o w s a n d y e l l o w greens p r e d o m i n a t i n g lifts one to the w o r l d of i m a g i n a t i o n w h e r e c o m b i n a t i o n s of a p p a r e n t l y u n l i k e l y objects are h i g h l y l o g i c a l , desirable a n d s a t i s f y i n g . T h e students i n courses o f i n t e r i o r a r c h i t e c t u r e and d e s i g n , taught by P r o f e s s o r B a r b a r a S m i t h , w i l l e x h i b i t three groups of plates a n d designs. C h i e f o f these is a series o f t w e n t y p l a n s o f d e c o r a t i v e schemes f o r student r o o m s , lounges, r e c r e a t i o n a l a n d d i n i n g r o o m s and halls in u n i v e r s i t y o w n e d d o r m i t o r i e s . T h e benefit w a s p r o d u c e d b y S a m H a r r i s a n d A r t h u r H a m m e r s t e i n , t h e proceeds g o i n g to the support of c r i p p l e d c h i l d r e n . Whitworth of Highland Park, formerly of Glencoe, will present her senior recital in the recital hall of the School of Music of .X orthwe stern university at 8:15 o'clock Monday evening. May IT. Miss Whitworth studied at Northwestern under Kurt Wanieck and is a member of Phi Beta, honorary music sorority. She will be heard in selections from Bach, Brahms; Liszt, Chopin, and modem composers.
