O r v i l l e D a v i s Jones, 1615 Forest avenue, W i l m e t t e , have returned f r o m an eighteen-day cruise on the C o l o m b i a n line to H a i t i , so primitive i n many of its aspects that it seems like a different w o r l d . H a i t i lies w h o l l y w i t h i n the tropics, and its high mountains descend abruptly to the Caribbean sea f r o m most of its coastline. Stopping a day at P o r t au P r i n c e , capital of H a i t i , M r . and M r s . Jones took a motor t r i p to Kenscoff and Petion V i l l e . T h e i r next port was K i n g s t o n , Jamaica, from there they took a motor t r i p to H o p e and Castleton Gardens, each filled w i t h tropical orchids, gorgeous flowering trees, shrubs, and rainbow colored birds. K i n g s t o n is famed for its t r i m B r i t i s h shops and smart hotels. V i e w Oldest W a l l e d City N e x t M r . and M r s . Jones stopped at P u e r t o C o l o m b i a , Colombia, South A m e r i c a , for a day and resumed their cruise to Cartagean, oldest walled city in the new w o r l d . H e r e they visited famous fortresses, including the Citadel of San Felipe de Barajos which dates from 1620, and the cathedral and a r c h bishop's palace and the renowned Jesuit C h u r c h of S a n P e d r o C l a v e r . A f t e r an ascent of P o p a H i l l , they began the return cruise, stopping a day at C o l o n and a day at Cristobal, Canal Zone. I n the C a n a l Zone they went by motor to Gatun L o c k s where they arrived in time to see a Lhnted States troop ship, the Chateau T h i e r r y , filled with young soldiers in K h a k i u n i forms, pass through the locks to the Pacific Ocean. T w o submarines passed in the opposite direction going to the A t l a n t i c . T h e r e followed a r a i l trip to old P a n a m a C i t y and B a l b o a o n the Pacific Ocean. T h e hills beyond Gatun L a k e are heavily fortified. A i r p l a n e s are · pi rmittcd to fly l o w over the canal, and cameras are taken from passengers and returned after airplane trips. A second call at K i n g s t o n and g l a m orous P o r t au P r i n c e followed, and then they made their final port of c a l l at historic, colorful Cape H a i t i a n on the north coast of H a i t i . H e r e they drove to the ruins of H e n r i Chrislophe't exquisite palace. Sans Souci, at M i l o t , and through the tropical jungle to the forbidding and incredible mountain fortress, the Citadel L a F e r r i c r e . H a i t i was discovered by Columbus w h o landed a! M o r e St. N i c h o l a s On December 6, 1492. L e a v i n g H a i t i they spent four days returning through the Spanish M a i n , the Caribbean, the W i n d w a r d Passage and the A t l a n t i c to N e w Y o r k where they stopped for several days to visit Mr. Jones' brother, Rodney W i l c o x Jones of N e w Rochelle, w h o is an ardent orchid plant collector. O n the roof a n d i n the c e n ter was p l a c e d a w i n d - v a n e , d i s p l a y i n g the figure of a T r i t o n whose sceptre a l w a y s p o i n t e d to the " w i n d octant."
