The Indians whipped Waukegan 15-49 and Niles East 19-42 last week. On Saturday, New Trier's fourth came in the Mattoon Invitational, which was won by Naperville with 49 points. Chicago Lane was second at 78, followed by Glenbard West 95, and New Trier 180. The best showing for the Indians in a field of 245 was Bill Johnson at 25th. Ted Harsha was 28th, followed by Barry Phillips 37th, Pete Butler 40th, Jim Davis 50th, Steve Catlett 69th, and Bob Lewis 70th. Johnson, Davis, Phillips, and Harsha crossed the line together in first place against Waukegan. Catlett was fifth. Phillips was the victor against Niles, followed by Davis, Johnson, Catlett, and Harsha in places three through six. New Trier's frosh-soph runners bested Waukegan 15-50 with Pete Butler winning and topped Niles by the same count with Bob Winter coming in first. New Trier travels to Highland Park at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. HERBERT MORTON is voting for P. J. CULLERTON for Count/ Assessor because he has saved taxpayers millions of dollars by completing assessments on time. ew Trier West's infant sports program has been given a big boost this fall by an English teacher. A group of sophomores may field a fine soccer team in the next two years, and if they do, part of the thanks should go to John Townsend. Townsend is spending a year in this country in a teacher-exchange program that has New Trier's Dick Campbell in England. His primary duty is to teach English at West, but his after-school hours are spent coaching the sophomore soccer team. Townsend teaches in Watford, a city of some 80,000 people, 15 miles north of London. He has coached John Townsend school and district soccer teams for 15 years. LTHOUGH SOCCER PLAYS a minor part on the American sport scene, many fans probably realize that it is a national sport in England. Townsend relates that there are some 50 adult soccer teams in Watford. "They have clubs (teams) organized on all levels," says Townsend. "Even if you're not very good, you can play amongst others of the same caliber. They organize their own local league." N USE YOUR LEISURE TIME CREATIVELY! A Townsend realizes the different background concerning soccer for children here and concentrates on teaching the basics to the New Trier sophs. Townsend has been effective in his teaching, however, since West sophomore's had surrendered only three goals to the opposition as of last week. The Englishman has been stressing defense to his young charges. "The one fault that most boys here seem to have is wanting to go after the ball," says Townsend. He has been working on a defense which cuts down on attacking the ball. This also has been the pattern for soccer on the professional level, which lets team advance the bail up the field until they near the goal when the defense proves more solid since the players don't have to run back from going for the ball. "Boys here aren't introduced to the sport until they're 15 or 16," says Townsend. "In England kids will be kicking a soccer ball around from an early age. They begin play on organized teams around 9 or 10." Working younger players into the game there follows somewhat our system for baseball. Professional clubs have scouts out," says Townsend. "Some of the boys are chosen to train under floodlights in the evening with the pro clubs. The pro clubs also run youth teams. However, if playing on the youth team interferes with the school, the latter takes preference." Townsend is reluctant to compare boys of high school age in England and the United States, but theorizes that boys here probably are about a year behind. "One of the problems here is that they don't get to see top-class teams play," says the Englishman. Soccer encompasses many more teams and players in England than baseball does here on the professional level, even in the heydays of the minor leagues. There are four divisions in the English League, the "major league" of the country, which totals 92 clubs. The network stretches down to many pro leagues spread throughout the nation. The season for the pros lasts from late August to the middle of May. And some of you women who get tired of watching baseball on television can figure what it's like in England, where soccer is a popular sport for TV coverage.
