Mud, Inspired Foe Hurt Raiders mi iiiunniuii North Shore Grid Team Slides Past Parker 12-6 North Shore Country Day finally wore down Francis Parker in the fourth period and stopped the running of powerful Dave Pfendler to squeak by with a 12-6 football victory Saturday in Winnetka. It squared North Shore's Independent League record at 1-1 and brought the season standard to 2-3. Francis Parker got the momentum early when it stopped a drive by North Shore on the 10-yard line and came back with a touchdown. Pfendler scored on a 64-yard romp in which he broke four tackles. "The ball game would have been different if we had scored on that drive," said coach Mac McCarty of North Shore, "but they played an inspired game after that." The Raiders, who were outgained by 52 yards in the first half, came back to hold Parker to only 49 yards in the last two quarters. Harper Scores the First The first North Shore touchdown came on a drive that was capped by fullback Bill Harper's eight-yard run. Parker failed to move the ball after the kickoff and had to turn it over on its own 32 when a bad pass from center prevented a punt. The Raiders also were stopped come," said McCarty, "because I could see defeat looming. It was a muddy day and we couldn't go outside. It's nice to score twice when you have to keep running up the middle." Glenwood School Is Next North Shore will try to move above the .500 mark in league play Saturday at Glenwood School. The contest is set for 2 p.m. North Shore's frosh-soph team will play at 10 a.m. at Lake Forest Academy. Glenwood shares the loop lead with Morgan Park, both at 2-0. Glenwood ripped Elgin Academy 37-0 Saturday as Bob Leach scored five touchdowns from distances of 37, 28, 33, 20, and 60 yards. Glenwood's other win also was over Francis Parker by a 13-6 count. Leach scored two other TDs in Glenwood's non-league losses to Luther South 40-6 and Wheaton Academy 18-7. McCarty had words of praise for the performance of Art Hynes on defense against Parker. Hynes, a tackle on offense, hadn't been used much on defense in previous games. The 180-pounder saved a possible tying touchdown for Parker late in the game by coming across the field to tackle Pfendler after he had taken a screen pass. III. · Francis, Lambert To Runnerup Spots St. Francis and St. Lambert took control of second place in the two divisions of the North Shore Catholic Grammar School Football League Saturday after victories over leading contenders. St. Francis edged St. John Brebeuf of Niles 7-0 to remain a game behind Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the American League. OLPH topped Mary Seat of Wisdom 19-7 for its fifth straight win. In the National League, St. Lambert clipped Faith, Hope, and Charity of Winnetka 12-6. St. Philip of Northfield boosted its mark to 50 by stopping St. Catherine Laboure of Glenview 19-6. A 50-yard pass play from Bill O'Connor to Mike Rodenkirk gave St. Francis its lone touchdown. Lineman Mike Saltarelli of St. Lambert stole the ball in the Faith, Hope, and Charity backfield and rambled 65 yards for the deciding touchdown in the second quarter. FHC scored in the third period after trailing 12-0 at halftime, and had another tally called back due to a penalty. The running of halfback Doug Dasse led to St. Lambert's first TD, which was scored on a fouryard run by Wally Grimes. Also in the National loop, Sacred Heart of Winnetka blanked St. Athanasius 19-0 as David Gleason scored one touchdown and sparklled on defense. Two weeks remain on the schedule before the start of playoffs on Nov. 5. The other National League contest Saturday saw St. Joan of Arc and St. Mary of Evanston play to a scoreless tie. Two American League games were played Monday night after wet grounds prevented the action Saturday at Meadowhill Park in Northbrook. St. Norbert overwhelmed St. Nicholas 31-0 and Holy Cross of Deerfield continued its upswing by smashing St. Joseph 26-6. Holy Cross, the newest team in the league, lost its first three starts but came back two weeks ago to upset St. John Brebeuf.
