WILMETTE Smo e Screens Ca Fl t Build. . ' · Citizens of Wilmette should not be deceived by the efforts now being made to distract attention froni the sole issue of the village campaign and to divert discussion to the lighting system, village management, tax assessments, etc. None of these is a subject of controversy at this time. There is one issue, and ONE O~LY, and that is this: Do you want the character of Wilmette, as a village of homes, to be forever destroyed, and a building such as that illustrated herewith built on the vacant lot adjoining youn, or take the .place of your neighbor's attractive cottage? The Home . ~arty stands squarely for your home against the flat. It does not want flat buildings in any part of Wilmette. Its candidates, all able men, all home owners, are PLEDGED to use every lawful means to prevent the erection of flats . . The Community Party promises to give "the utmost of protection against the building of fiats in reaiclential sections." (Flats . are now prohibited in residential sections by the zoning ordinance, which the Comm.~nity Party claims is absolute protection.) ... · · -Th~ Hotne Patty promises .to do its utmost to keep flats out of Wilmette. DO YOU WANT FLATS IN WILMETTE? The issue is clean-cttt.' Smoke scr:eens cannot cloud it. Casting aspersions upon citizens and organizations cannot befuddle it. The present Village Board itself created the issue when by its acts it made possible the 58-flat building now going up at Fifth St. and Linden Ave. A thousand home-loving citizens of Wilmette (not politicians) accepted that issue by nominating the Home Party candidates at a public meeting. This issue cannot and WILL NOT be shoved aside, or confused with questions which have absolutely no place in this campaign. On this issue, AND THIS ALONE, the battle will be fought. There is only ONE WAY in which you can strike an effective blow at the alien rent speculators who would destroy the value of your home without compunction, and that is to work and vote for the Do You Want a Flat Builclina on the Lot Next to Yours? . Wilmette, Ill., April 7, 1924. To Whom It May Concern: The Wilmette Chapter, American Association of Engineers, is in no way affiliated ·with the Home Party nor the Community party.
