Being optimist and banker, I have been a~ked to say a word in this issue about the banking business in Wilmette. Barring the days of service in the world war. I have served continuously in the banking business in this community for eight years. It has been an interesting experience and I can ay truthfully that I am fond of the busines , and wunt mnelf an optimist in it. ·A community, quite generally, is judged or rated by the strength of its hanks and the volume of their depositll. In other words, the bank is an index to the husiness standing and pro perity. of the community. It follow that, in looking up a town or small city, invariably, you refer to the bank directory for an intelligent estimate of its importance \\"hen a bank becomes established in a community, what is its position therein. and its relation thereto? It becomes a R. M. Bums dearing house for business. a ~crvice OptimiSt 1-,.i·ttion for financial transactionc;, :1 cle. J>O~itory for savings and a place of ltafc· ty and protection for valuahlcs . The importance of the hank's relation to the community cannot be O\'er-c;.timated. It is interested in, and assists in the building of homes: it extends financial aid to the desen·ing young hu~in rss man : it preaches the gospel of thri it and intelligent economy, and co-operates alwa~ s in worthy and philanthropic entcrpri,es. Meanwhile, the communitv deliberately entrusts to this organizatio;1 of persons the care, custody and admini.tration oi the saving of the thrifty, the inheritance of the widow and orphan, the working balances of its husinc·'s men. Here, let me make the statcnwnt, and I am sure you will agree with me. that no set of men shou ld be permitted tn mar.age a banking institution who do not, deep dowu in their hearts and souls, feel and realize the responsibility and scaredness of such a trust. Banking needs of \Vilmettc are well ca.rcd. for. \\'c have two flourishing institutiOns, one organized under the state, and the other under the national law. B~t~ are s~r.ving the puhlic well.
