\VIL~IETTE LIFE, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1924 6 : ISLANDERS END LENGTHY CRUISE Adventure Campen Steer Safely into Wilmette Harbor Moorings STORE HOURS 8 A. M. TO 6 P. M. - FOUR DELIVERIES DAILY - TELEPHONE WILMETTE SSS HAD STORMY SUMMER But Everybody Aboard Is "In the Pink" In charge of her sk_ipper, Ch~rles A. Kinney, assisted by J ·my Flemmg a.nd Jimmy Kerr, the cruiser, Dream G·rl, arrived in Wilmette harbor late Saturday evening. The trip from Adventure island was interrupted on several occasions by severe storms, forcing the 'raft to put in for shelter at Egg Harbor, Kenosha, and again at Great Lakes Naval station. Early in July the Dream Girl teEt Wilmette with nineteen north shore boys aboard and three boats in tow, all bound for Adventure island, 275 miles north of Green Bay. At Sturgeon Bay eleven more boys were picked up, and the entire party proceeded to the island. Here the boys set up the camp, cleared new tent sites, built a water system. constructed camp furniture, established a gmp store, and in general set up a "world" of their own. After establishing the main camp the boys, in small squads, set up a temporary camp on the new island which Mr. Kinney had purchased last spring. This new island, which is just two miles from Fish Creek, and about a mile from the mainland, will be the future site of Adventure island camp. Already the boys have cut trails through the most densely wooded sections and have surveyed portions of the island for locating the camp, the harbor, piers, lookout towers and other improvements. Most of the island is so heavily wooded that the boys will never lack an inexhaustible supply of spruce and cedar for their cabins. Se..,ice Brin·· Honon One of the unique plans for the new island, initiated this year, is the naming of the trails, bays, points, and other natural features after those boys or leaders who have rendered some distinct service to the camp spirit. To Mrs. Elizabeth Williams, the cook, fell the honor of having the playfield named "Williams Field," in recognition of her invaluable services. No doubt the remembrance of thick juicy huckleberry pies had its influence on the boys' votes. At.·all events the choice was unanimous. An interesting event of the summer was the filming of the camp activities by the American Film company. The pictures will be shown at the camp reunion. Another event was the play, "Dauntless Nicolet," written for the camp by }. A. "Tony" Humphreys, who also directed it. Still another event, interestins ~ not pleasant to recall, was the sinking · of the new camp runabout, "Robin Hood," in a teriffic storm. · The boat was anchored at the time and stood up against the gale for fifteen hours before the seas finally swamped it. Excellent Health Record In spite of the unusually inclement weather, the camp season was very successful. Aside from a single case of chicken-pox, which developed early in the aeason, and the usual minor cuts and bruises, the camp added another year to its unbroken record of no serious accidents or sickness. The boys at camp this year were: Francis Allen, Henry Allen, Gordon Badenoch, Pardee Beardslee, John Borden, Philip Broderick, John Clark, Stanley Craven, Fred de Peyster, Jimmy Fleming, Melburn Forth, Alfred Gellhorn, Steve Hawkshurst, Bill Hughes, Bob Joslin, Jimmy Kerr, Arthur Mayer, Bud Marble, Hobart Newman, Jamie Odell, Jack Odell, Gilbert Pirrung, Jack Rathbone, Elmer Reder, Paul Schoenfeld, Bill Stix, Sherman Taylor, Jack Thomas, Platt and Geoffrey Whitman.
