WoMEN PRAISE DODD TEXTBOOK t WILMETTE LIFE, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12 1924 · -----' Voters League Studies Poli- tical Science Work G·wernment in Illinois is the title of a n~ " book on political science by Walter F. Dodd and Sue H. Dodd. Many Wilmette people will remember the lectures given by M~s: Dodd under the auspices of the CIVICS department of the Woman's dub and likewise may be familiar with Mr. Dodd, who was formerly Associate Professor of Political Science in the University of IJiinois, and later at the University of Chicago, and was for a time secretary of the Jllinois Legislative bureau. The University of Chicago Press savs of the book: ".·... It contains a graphic presentation of every element that enters into governmental life. U analyzes the cost of gevernment and tells you new ways of exercising more effectively your civic rights. It explains just what things are done by governing bod ies and indicates the share that you may take in controlling their administration .. .. This volume will be of service only to the seriow minded voter to students of political science in schools and colleges, and to study wr~~:r·ou!>S everywhere . . . it is the only available for effective compliance with the act passed by the legislature in 1921 requiring that not less than · one hour a week be devoted to the study of government during the last two years of the grammar and the £out years of high school. Members of state and city chambers of commerce, real estate boards, corporation training schools, voters leagues and women's clubs will lind it practical and suited to their specific needs." This book may be ordered through Mrs. \V. J. Weldon, 1340 Greenwood a,·enue, chairman of the Efficiency in Government committee ef the civics department of the Woman's club, and Mrs. Charles Evans, 1007 Lake avenue, who is one of the officials of the Wilmette League of Women Voters. They especially recommend it for the housewife who wishes to understand politics and be able to cast her vote intelligently and also for those who have children of school age. It will mean a great convenience for the latter as this beek is used at the schools and being very much in demand is very difficult to get at the libraries. Shop early and shop here! "The Boy Problem" was li~cu~~ed at the Wilmette Optimist Chili luncheon Tuesday of this week when Dr. Frank 0. Beck, of Garrett Biblical Institute, N'orthwestern university, was the speaker. Dr. Beck, who is an authority on social service problems, declared America is responsible if immigrants coming to her shores are not properly worked into the !-Oeial fabric of the nation. Statistics prove, said Dr. Beck, that the so-called foreign element does not predominate among criminals. Many "best families," he asserted, are directly traceable in prison records throughout the country. In recent years we find many of our most dangerow criminals among the educated classes. The foreign boy will make an excellent citizen if only given half a chance to apply his native talent in his adopted country, concluded the speaker. If he is a good farmer, for instance, he should be perm.ittc:d to go into the rural sections and not compelled to eke out an existence in the strange environment of metropolitan life. "Help the foreign boy and you will be making good citizens," was the advice to the Optimists. Among those .boys coming from mouth to spend the holidays at homes are: Fred and Harry Karl King, Jr., and Curtis Bird.
