Let us start with that standard favorite, "Aida." Madam Rethberg- is scheduled for the name part of this celebrated V crdi opus and her .splendid work in this part needs no introduction to Ravinia audiences. ~fadam Bm1rskaya, alluring- as Amnnis. is likewise well known to those who have attended opera at Ravinia during the last ~tn: ral sea-.oJJ:o-. This year another artist. ~fadam Claussen. will alternate with ~~adam Rourskaya in this role, and one may take it for granted that her idea of the psychology of the jcaJous princess will he much different irom that held hy the Russiai1 singer. \\·hat is c\·en more important is that t\\'O tenors are available to sing the part oi the heroic Radame s. These are ~f r . ~~art inelli and Mr. Johnson. Each has hi s npin ion of what the Egyptian captain would do and how he would net under the circumstances, and it will he· interesting to sec how each presents this character. Roth Mr. Danise and ~fr . Basiola may he heard during the season as Amonasro, one of the outstanding parts in this opera, while ~fr. Hothier and Mr. Lazzari will take their turns as Ramfi s. · Both Mr. Martinelli and Mr. Johnso n arc exponents of the title role in "Andrea Chenier" and each will prese nt the revolutionary poet according- to his individual idea.-; of the character. 1 Gerard will likelv find both Mr. Danise and Mr. Basiola in the role, while ~adam Bourskaya and Madam Claus:-;en will alternate in the mezzo soprano part. "The Masked Ball." which has heen an outstanding Ravinia success ior two seasons. will have Madam Rethherg as its heroine, but the lyric part of Oscar will have three possible exponents during the coming- season. these being Mis:-; Macbeth. Miss Paggi and Miss Lewis. 1Iadam Bourskaya and Madam Claussen are both available as Ulrica. while Mr. Martinelli will ahYays be heard as Richard. Mr. Danise and Mr. Basiola are both well versed in the part of Reinhart. Splendid Yariety is promised for "The Rarher of SeYille." both Miss Macbeth and Miss Paggi being wclJknown as Rosina. while Mr. Danise and Mr. ·Basiola arc hoth rxperts in the name part.
