The evening meeting of Logan-Howard Parent-Teacher association Tuesday, March 6, was marked by a generous attendance of fathers as well as mothers, who came to learn "what's what" in the moving picture question. The speaker was Mr. Nelson L. Green, editor of the magazine, "The Educa· . tional Screen." The program was opened by Miss Adelaide Jones, who sang a group of three charming songs accompanied by Miss Susannah Armstrong. Mr. Green spoke incisively on the subject of "Motion Pictures and the Child." Being early fascinated by the possibilities of the screen as a medium of education-even as an art-he deplored the fact that the thinking public largely stays away from the mo-vies. Perhaps 90% go from habit, the quality and subject of the movie being the least of their worries. Citing examples of gross extravagances in production, for which the ' public must pay eventually, Mr. Green declared the intellectual shortcomings of producers were even more flagrant. With our rigid demands for training in school teachers we should make similar demands of the ones who produce the films which influence our children. In the weekly attendance at movies of 130 million people, 22% are estimated to be children under 12. These plastic embryos of adults need to be strengthened, not weakened. Absorbing impressions as a sponge absorbs water, they are thrown into a conflict between two sets of ideals, and having P. T. Names are. co~fusing, a'n d stars do not always maantaan the excellence that first wins our approval. · Disclaiming any financial interest in the. magazine he edits, Mr. Green exp~aned the department, "Film Estimates," printed therein. A national ~ommittee of ~tell~gent judges, havmg no connections with the moving pi'cture industry, give honest opinions of films as a service to the public, and jadP the a·~ j . e n t of these is pati-= lished. These Film Estimates are endorsed by Parent-Teacher associations, Federation of Woman's Clubs. and the American Farm Bureau Federation. On the strength of these .recommendations we can demand the films we approve and make our inftuence felt in the box offices of neighborhood theaters-the only sensitive point of the film indu·stry.
