Mrs. Katherine ·Knowles Robbins was the speaker at the meeting_ 9f the · Central-Laurel P. T. A. held Tuesday afternoon, March 13, and her subject was "Better Speech." Mrs. Herbert Leach was in charge of the program and introduced the speaker. Mrs. Robbins said that in . America we have standardized everything except our language. She said that the Better Speech movement has been in existence for the past ten years and has now been taken up by the General Federation of Women's Clubs and has spread all over· the United States, but ] ohn Adams, one of America's greatest statesmen, was one of the first to inaugurate better speech. As an example of the way in which this movement has grown, Mrs. Robbins told of the Better Speech Campaign conducted last year in Tennessee. Book stores, florists, and numerous other business houses helped advertise it, · and the State government furnished paper and had printed a booklet on the subject. Mrs. Robbins said that we have been afraid to say the correct thing for fear of being called "High Brow." She pointed out the abuse of adjectives, such as marvelous, wonderful and gorgeous, which make up much of the modern woman's vocabulary. She also called attention to the use of the word "sure" instead of "yes," and such slang phrases as, "I'll say·· and "He sure knows his stuff" and many others which make up the vocabulary of the modern youth. The Better Speech · Movement has helped to improve the American drama also. Gold medals have been awarded to actresses and actors having the most beautiful diction. Mrs. William Reyfeld, who, with Mrs. Paul R. Leach, was a delegate to the Illinois Women's Legislative Council, gave an interesting report. Mrs. William A. Kendrick, vicepresident of the P. T. A., announced that on Tuesday evening, April 17, the School Beautiful committee and the Art league will have charge of the meeting. The speaker will be Lena McCauley, art critic of the Chicago Evening Post. At this meeting the Art league will present the picture which it has purchased as a memorial to Miss Marian Caswell, who was for many years art director in the Wilmette schools. Mrs. Kendrick spoke of the splendid work that Mrs. Weedon, chairman of the School Beautiful committee has done in school helping to beautify the grounds. A childrens' orchestra composed of the third grade, Miss Helen Smith's room, gave a delightful performance. Mothers of the eighth grade pupils were hostesses. The prize for attendance went to Miss Perring's room, seventh grade. 0 O 1 NAVEL.. 59e ae.. · Do&. . . . . FLORIDA· :~~Nf._AS~ .. .. 69e perial v~.
