"It proves," says the weekly, "that while 1'\ ew York has a population of more than 7,000.000 and is considered the financial and commercial center of the world, the public is more interested in reading about a town which can boast of t1othing more than being the ftlm capital with plenty of hooey planted, propagated and cultured by a large army of pres s agents and chatter writers." The public, the weekly adds, has "be~ome so fed up on the stereotyped movie note that anything in the way of free publicity copy from Hollywood has lost its kick." This has forced leading news services, metropolitan dailies, and fan magazines to send their own writers to Movieville, the weekly adds, to produce authentic copy for millions of news hungry picture fans. This is a story of youth's desire to grow up in order to accomplish something in the world. The spirit of )·outh pervades the picture. Another picture to be shown on the same bill is "A Thief in the Dark," a mystery circus picture which concerns the activities of a gang of side-show crooks and their attempts to steal a fortune in jewels from an eccentric old recluse and his pretty granddaughter. The all-star cast is headed by George Meeker, of "Four Sons," and Doris Hill. "Harold Teen," coming to the Teatro del Lago this Sunday, July 22, is Harold of the comic strip come to life on the screen. It is a rqllicking and hilarious farce of high school activi· ties in a sman town with a great cast of funsters. Arthur Lake walks away with honors as Harold. Mary Brian, as Lillums; Lucien Littlefield, as Grandpap, and Alice White, as the dizzy blonde, rank as close seconds. In "The Drag Net," George Bancroft's latest starring vehicle for Paramount, which opens Monday at the Teatro .del Lago for two days, the thc:-me of the story is featured by new treatment of the unrlerworld melodramatic plot. Two-Gun Nolan (George Bancroft), far famed shot, is police captain of the town's toughest district. His immediate problem is Trent, murderer and arch gangster. K o one on the force but a young detective has ever found Trent's hangout; he is murdered, and from that point, gang mass-movement contrasts effectively with Nolan's efforts to avenge the boy. Three complete casts of film celebrities in a single picture is the departure from ordinary film drama in "Diamond Handcuffs," gripping drama of love, diamonds and the underworld, which comes to the Teatro del Lago next Wednesday, July 25. Eleanor Boardman, Lawrence Gray, Conrad 1\agel, Gwen Lee, and Lena Malena are among the principals appearing in the casts. · Evelyn Brent, beautiful brunette actress, appears 111 the chief supporting role to Adolphe Menjou in that star's latest product10n entitled "His Ttb s Lady," to be shown at the Teatro del Lago next Thursday. It is the story of a prac· tical joke that turned into a real love affair between a rich woman and a 'super' of the stage. "We Americans," Teatro attraction for next Friday, is not a racial picture, but a drama of American immigrants. A Russian, a German, and an Italian familv came to America fifteen years before. the war. Their struggles for an existence, their loyalty, and their perplexities (particularly over the younger generation who find it so easy to assimilate American ideas and customs), make a story of absorbing in~erest. George Sidney plays the leadmg role. Gloria Swanson's new picture is now called "Queen Kelly," instead of "The Swamp." And Edmund Lowe is to have the male lead, we are told. Those who saw Mary Pickforq in "Sparrows" will remember another Mary-Mary Louise Miller, who played the part of the baby. Now Mary Louise bids fair to be one of Hollywood's most famous and most moneyed babies. She started on a salary as a child actress, then won a $2,000 scholarship in a school of music, and later took first honors in the child personality contest at an international pageant of music. She has also won first prize at the Ocean Park baby parade. The cast for "The Canary Murder Case" is being selected at the Para-· mount coast studios. Louise Brooks is to be the Canary, while Ruth Taylor will be Alice, her chorus girl friend. William Powell will play Philo Vante, the eminent detective who solves the murder mystery.
