The picture is featured by what is probably the most thrilling steeplechase ever run for the screen, full of spills, tremendous leaps, and dangerous, narrow escapes. Gretel Yoltz is good as the snappy chorus girl, as are Lloyd Whitlock as the villain, Tod Sloan as the elderly jockey, and James Bradbury, Sr., as Mr. Finch. In "Laugh, Clown, Laugh," coming to the Community House next Friday, Lon Chaney starts the picture as a youth, then appears as in middle age, and finally as an old man. He plays the tragic clown in this drama of life behind the scenes in the theater, the same role played by Lionel Barrymore in the stage version. Loretta Young is the heroine. The story is tense. It tells of the down's sacrifice for the woman he loves, a beautiful romance surrounded by thrills, 'Spectacle, and comedy. Nils Asther plays the male juvenile role. Lavish replicas of European theaters and other elaborate detail mark the huge production. ------------------~----···················--·····---"Hot Heels" Booked for Varsity Schedules Community House Tuesday "Street Angel" /or Three Day Showing "Excess Baggage" is the picture now showing at the Varsity theater in Evanston. For a fascinating movie of backstage life among the vaudevillians, with breezy Bill Haines a3 Eddie Kane, it cannot be complained of. · As an optical opera it is every bit as delightful as the stage version which recently closed its long run in the loop. If you saw the play from which "Excess Baggage" wa3 adapted you know its hero is a vaudeville juggler who marries a dancer, and, by adding a dangerous "slide for life" to his act, gets on the Big Time. Thinking that she is just "exces-.; baggage," Eddie's wife persuades him to let her sign a movie contract. Without his wife to give him poise and confidence, the temperamental Eddie is unable to do his slide, and the picture \\'ill tell you the rest. The patho.; of the tale is brightened by gay incident. Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell continue to remain in Seventh Heaven in their more recent picture, "Street Angel," which will be shown for three days beginning next Monday at the Varsity. It is a human, appealing story, adorably acted. Miss Gaynor plays a little Italian circus performer, whose innocence and poverty force her to attempt the last resources of desperate girls. How a tramp artist, played by Farrell. rescues her; how they are separated and reunited, forms the basis of a tearwtinging romance. The simple, sincere playing of the two leading characters is the ·o utstanding characteristic of the picture. Natalie Kingston and Henry Armetta, also in the cast, give good performances. · "STREET AMGEL" JANET GAYNOR aad CHAS. FARRELL PAULINE FREDERICK BACK Pauline Frederick is coming back to the screen. She has a long term contract to star in Warner Bros.' talking pictures, and has just completed the featured role in a vitaphone all-talkie called "On Trial."
