Riley's fantasy after the Chinese manner, '"Little New Moon," has , been chosen for .the pre-holiday play to be presented by the Fine Arh department of the Evanston Woman's club. It will be presented Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 11, and this performance will precede the three Playshop productions to be staged at the School of Speech the evenings of Dec. 12, 13 and 14. These are devoted primarily to the North Shore Theater guild, members of the play-writing classes and School of Spe·e ch students, so the week's performances will thoroughly cover the attention oi the various groups which have active interest in or are particular patrons of the dram.a in Evanston and on the north shore. One of the interesting features of the fantasy will be the costumes. These are being designed by Miss E. Louise Guernsey who has made intensive study, not only for the cut and color correct for ' the characters, but also for the symbols which form the decorations. The motif which decorates the costume of Key Fah, for example, the gardener of the Emperor, means "a garden," and the one which the juggler, Lee Sing, will wear, means "magic." In the real Chinese theater the robes used are truly regal, their cost often mounting into thousands of dollars. The Playshop hopes in their production to create beauty of color, line and design, in simple materials. The great bronze gong used in all the magic music for "Little New Moon," is an antique temple gong brought from China for the production. The beauty of the music of the Chinese gong is held unrivaled by that of any other gongs. Percussion instruments of both metal and wood will be much used in the Chinese orchestra which will play at the several productions. There will be four uses of the dance in "'Little New Moon." The Snowmaiden with her cold and the Desert Winds. with his heat are part of the dramatic effort of the Juggler to destroy the chrysanthemum. As they are cosmic forces, their dance-forms are free of Chinese restrictions. The battle dance with which Yinyin repels the Snowmaiden, is based on the stylized dance of the Chinese, as is the chrysanthemum dance given by Key Wing. The juxaposition of two styles makes interesting contrast. ·· · Thankstriving Festival Held at Harrison Hall A Thanksgiving pageant and festival were held the Tuesday before Thanksgiving at Harrison hall, National Kindergarten college.
