"Ramona," with Dolores del Rio and Warner Baxter. is to be on the scree·n there next Friday, D. e..:ember 28. There will l>e an extra matinee at 2:30 p. m. and the usual matinee at 4. p, m. "Ramona" is from a story by ·Helen Hunt Jackson which is regarded ;s one of the present day American classics. When Mrs. Jackson decided to write the story she had a deliberate purpose and as high an aim as that associated with the writing of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." She did not realize that her story would prove one of America's most interesting romances. It was the writer's motive to bring the treatment of the Indians bv the Americans before Congress in the 11ope that Congress would enact just laws. Before "Ramona" recalled the Indians' plight in fi<;tion from, Mrs. Jackson had written "A Century of Dishonor," and indictment . of the government for its failure to keep its promise with the Red Man from early times down to the date of the puhlica·tion of the book, 1880. Later she bec.ame convinced that public sympathy on behalf of the Mission Indians of California could be awakened if re\'ealed in storv form: hence her novel with a · purpose- "Ramona." his wife's death, and comes out of his nightmare with a determinatio.n to pull himself together and do thmgs for his son. He manages to get a steady job and save money, which he sends to the authorities whenever he can . At last Jimmy comes to college, where his father is janitor, believing that dad, who is helping him through, is some great and good man.
