... , · January 11, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE 15 "White Cargo" Is 0. K. for Adults, Not for Children "White Cargo," presented by the Karl Way Players at the New Evan~ ton theater this week, isn't for the children but it's good meat for the adults. The play takes place in the tropics in - a bungalow on the west coast of Africa. Were it not for the excellent ·acting of the Karl Way Players and the sensational features of the plot, the performance would become monotonous. for it lasts three hours and the setting is unchanged throughout the six scenes. As explained by its author, "White Cargo" is an attempt to portray the stru~gle for development in a cou. n try which steadily defies the encroaching civilization. It is the tragedy of an ever shining sun which breeds inevitable rot; a dry rot which penetrates not only the vegetation and inanimate objects. but the minds and hearts of the white men who attempt to conquer it." Popular Wi", Audience The man who comes nearest to conquering it is Harry Witzel (Karl Way), described as the man "who stays." Despite his snarly, unpleasant disposition, Witzel is, with the possible exception of the doctor, the most popular character in the play. And he is such because of Karl Way's remarkable acting. Witzel is the eternal oessimist and hitter satirist, who. while more dis.s atisfied than anv of his associates, is the most understanding. The doctor. played by Lew Welch, is next in line for honors. As the kindl:v. forgetful old gentleman who likes his whiskey, Welch does a great piece of acting. The doctor is the exact opposite of Witzel in one particular. He is satisfierl with his present 5tation in life, perhaps because he must die, for too much alcohol ha:i caused his downfall in England and he dares not return. Hackett Does Well · Karl Hackett does well in the part of Allan Langford, the man "who comes out." His hatred for \Vitzel is genuine. Upon arriving in Africa and becoming aware of Witzel's antagonism he vows never to return to England until he has accomplished his mission. The only way he will go hack. he says, is on a stretcher-and thus he goes hack. The baking African sun. the fevers, and most of all the part-white Tondele~r o, mistress of manv men, whom he marries, cause his failure. Miss Dorothy Holmes, recently seen in Chicago performance of "The Baby Cyclone," has the part of Tondeleyo. the onlv woman in the cast. She plays her seductive role as one would expect the real part to be played by a halfintelligent "half-breed" of the west African coast. Her best acting is done in the last act, when she ·attempts to poison Langford. her husband. after she has learned the "death-do-us-part" shrni ficance of marriag-e. William Noltner, as Frerl Ashlev, the quitter, "who goes back," has part which calls for what apoeared to be over-actinl?'. Others in the cast are: Richard Ward as the missionarv. Oliver Newcomb as the skiooer, Erlward Harvev as the engineer, Creed Owens as Jim Fish, and Joseph Zilch a~ Charles Worthing. For Bridge Parties, Luncheons, etc. ,. ,. But what does it mean? These two words, in bright letters on the trim parchment wrapper of the sealed package poultry bearing that name, are a guarantee that the chicken thus labeled is the finest produced. They mean .that, even during an off season such as this, when really good poultry is scarce, your Ford Sedalia Chicken will be tender, flavorful, and a joy to eat. Scientific feeding, immediate cleaning and selectivity do i t - selectivity so exacting that of all the chickens we handled at our Sedalia, Missouri plant during a recent week, · only 14 per cent were considered fine enough for the Ford Sedalia grade. These. same two words, on the egg carton in your ice box, mean that your eggs have been freshly gathered from the Sedalia farms, candled and graded with expert care, and rushed to your market. And on your butter carton, these words again denote a distinct superiority, a flavor that is possible only in the finest grade, countrychurned sweet cream butter. a Ask your market for uFORD SEDALIA" The Kenilworth club is having a supncr bridge thic;; evening-.
