Welding Machine of New Design Is Ford Labor-Saver A labor-saving development of great promise is the latest achievemen~ at the Ford Motor company plant, according to D. W. Leonard of Skokie Motors, Main street, Wilmette, North Shore Ford distributor. This device is a machine for welding the belt flange and brake housing simultaneously to the tube in the manufacture of · the rear axle shaft housing which promises an increase · of almost 100 per cent. in production of this department without ·any increase in the working force. The new machine welds at both end-; of the tube at the same time. On one end it welds the flange, on the other the housing. Previously each of those operations had to be performed separately. A total of 200 halves were welded each hour by four men, averaging twenty-five complete housings an hour per man. The new type machine will complete ninety housings an hour with two men, or an average of forty-five an hour per man. We use soft water and Ivory soap. E. Springer of Suburban Nash Sales, Winnetka. Mr. Springer's figures show that 45,500 cars were shipped in this period as compared with 24,000 cars in the same quarter of 1927, a gain of 21,500, or 89 per. cent. There was a decrease of 7,000 units over the preceding quarter of 1928. The total fiscal year production set a new high record for Nash. The total for that period was 137,800 units, compared with less than 124,000 cars in the previous year, and compared with the company's greatest record of 137,376 in 1925-1926. ..· .
