April 26, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE · New Trier Orator Entered in State Contest This Week Alfred Romig represented New Trier High school Thursday of this week in the first round of a statewide oratorical contest being sponsored by the ·Chicago Daily News. Five hundred Illinois high schools are competing. The district elimination contest in which Romig took part was held at Evanston and was for high schools of the north shore including New Trier, Evanston, Deerfield, Waukegan, and Loyola academy. . The winner will represent the north shore in the suburban contest to be held at Oak Park soon, and the winner of that event will compete in the state finals at Orchestra hall, Chicago, on May 17. The orations must be original, ten minutes in length, and dealing with some phase. of .the constitution. Some very attractive prizes are being offered. A trip to South America and five hundred dollars in cash will be given to the champion high school orator of Illinois. Second and third prizes in the state contest are two hundred and fifty dollars and one hundred dollars respectively. The state-wide oratorical contest sponsored by the Daily News is part of an international contest being conducted under the direction of newspapers in all parts of the world. The Illinois winner will go to Washington, D. C., to compete with other regional winners for national honors, and the national champion will represent the United States in the final international contest, also at Washington, in October. Christian Science Churches "---------------___. "Doctrine of Atonement" was the subject of the lesson-sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, April 21. ·~ The golden text , was, "Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for c. sweetsmelling savour" (Ephesians 5 :2). Among the citations which comprised the lesson-sermon was the following from the Bible: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are pecome new" (II Cor. 5 :17). The lesson-sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the ~crip tures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "He to who 'the arm of the Lord' is revealed will believe our report, and rise into newness of life with regeneration. This is having part in the atonement; this is the understanding, in which Jesus suffered and triumphed." Informal Dance to Raiae Funds for Debate Expense An informal dance to be called the "spring frolic" will be held in the mess hall of New Trier High school Friday, May 10. The dance, which is being sponsored by the forensic board of the school, will be open to all New Trier students. Proceeds from th~ dance will be used to help defray the debate expenses for this year, such as the entertainment of visiting teams and the paying of judges. Betty Buckett and "Bun" Reily are on the committee which is making arrangements for the affair. · Mrs. Paul R. Soule, 915 Lake avenue, and her two sons, Paul Jr. and Charles, will leave today to '3pend a week in Washington, D. C., with Mrs. Soule's mother Mrs. M. R. Northwestern Frosh Would Meet New Trier Debaters Northwestern university freshman debaters have challenged New Trier High school to a debate to be held sometime within the next few weeks. Chester E. MacLean, New Trier debate coach, stated this week that such a contest probably will be arranged. The Northwestern freshmen and New Trier have been debating the same question this year, the abolition of the jury system. If a date can be arranged for the debate the best speakers available will be picked to represent New Trier. Mrs. L. F.
