The Delta Gamma Mothers' associa- Miss A nne Frierson Appears on Skokie D. A. R. ·Program By P. H. The Skokie Vall'ey chapter of the D. A. R. met on Monday of this week at the home of Mrs. Harry Harrison Abbotsford road. Kenilworth with ~ large attendance. Mrs. Edwin Bluthardt, who sings with ·such poise and artistry opened the program of the afternoon with a group of songs, "Neyer More Alone" by Hadley, "A Folk Song" by Chadwick, and "The Eagle," by Grant Schaeffer, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Margaret Bluthardt. Miss Anne Frierson, graduate studt]lt of the Northwestern university school of speech and author of the recent successful play, "Quagmire" then gave a half hour of sketches revealing negro life such as depicted in the play, "Porgy," or the stories of Julia Peterkin . Mitss Frierson is a southern girl and knows the "Gullah" negro, as he is calJed, to perfection. She gave an account of a church service and of a funeral service, bringing the pathos and the humor of each, and in a unique and original way she brought before her listeners a vivid picture of this primitive negro of the isolated riceland communities. She showed how the neR"ro spiritu~ls evolve or develop from a line of scripture O'" a sentence from a prayer, chanted on and on until the words take on a kind of melody and in th~ir repetition form the neg-ro "spiritual." She then sang a number of songs with the banjo accompaniment in a most informal and charming manr.r. Miss Frierson will appear at the Shawnee club on Sun~ay, May 12. Mrs. Bluthardt closed the program with a second g-roup of 'songs "Transformation," by Watts, "The Cave," by Schneider, and "My Native Land," by Kaun. Mrs. Bluthardt seems to be at her best in the broad, sweeping dramatic songs and "The Eagle" and "My ~ative Land" were given with decided emphasis and dignity.
