May 31, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE Cites Values to N. T. Freshmen Prepare for Oratorical Contest Youth of Country Ten New Trier freshmen were at Citizens' C am.p entered in the preliminaries of the By Mabel H. Herrick (Past State Regent, Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution) Last summer it was my privilege to spe~d. a day at the Citizens' Military Trammg ~amp at Fort Sheridan. There I fgund a ~troup of young men studying ~ilitary tactics. They apparently enJOyed not only the mental but the physical opportunities which this study afforded them. Like many other forms of education it has its value, not so much from a necessity or intention of immediately putting it into practice, as from the storing up of knowledge which can be called upon when and if an emergency arises. Because the colleges teach higher mathematics, it does not follow that all to the . students wilt become mathematicians. How few of the college athletes follow that line for their life work. The teaching of the dead languages is principally of service in the training of the minds, and in the better understanding of our: present-day vocabulary. The old saying that "Knowledge is Power," still holds true, and so knowledge of whatever kind sooner or later demonstrates its value to its possessor. Military tactics have a very definite and practical value in civilian life. Entir~ly apart from any military activity, they are of great help in developing business leC!_dership and in the solving of industrial problems. This training also teaches loyalty and obedience to superiors in in_ d ustrial affairs. All of these things demonstrate the value of this training, entirely apart freshman oratorical contest scheduled for Friday, M~y · 31. They are: Lambert Maguire, Henrietta Vana, Donald Cardy, Defrees Holmes, Marion Tubbs, Anw vonReinsperg, Bob Nason, Ellen Sager, Margaret Cobb, and Clara Orvis. Five of the ten entered in th~ prelimin~ries will compete in the finals to be held next Wednesday morning. Roland Wehr, of the N~w Trier history department, has been coaching _ t he freshman orators, Stnd the contest !s being held under his direction. --< Third Anniversary .Sunday · of Eucharistic Congress The third anniversary of the International Eucharistic Congress in Chicago will be observed Sunday, June 2, when throngs of pilgrims will journey to St. Mary's of the Lake, Mundelein, for the Corpus Christi Sunday rites. Although the congress was held later in the month, this event on the annual church calendar is made the occasion for celebrating the great assemblage of 1926. The W. C. T. U. of Wilmette and Winnetka is to meet with Mrs. L. E. Blunt of 1008 Oakwood avenue, Wilmette, next Monday at 2 o'clock. This is to be .a business meeting, with election of officers. from any civic or patriotic value. Mothers and fath er s and those in authority, should realize the value of this mQvement and give it their hearty support. .Reliefagraf Invitations and Announcements All the Newest Wedding Styles Formal stationery of this kind must be correct, spotless, perfect. and of fine quality.
