June 14, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE the motor by increasing the stroke and redu~ing the bore. In this case the length of the cylinder block is then determined by the . valve area rather than the piston head area. The L & R Auto Service of Wilmette is the Chevrolet dealer. I Like cars and highways, motor tourists' c~mps have been in the throes o\ evolutiOn fo~ a decade but seemingly are now takmg a permanent form according to the iouring bureau of' the Chicago Motor Club. The camps now con~pr_ise . a number of cottages, or cabms, wtth complete furnishing s, and are known as "cabin camps." "They are a far. cry from the camps of .tet~, or even five , years ago," a bullet_m tssued by the motor club touring bureau stated. "Many cities and towns were prone to designate a s a camp any place where water was · available. The. result was that those motori st s who favored camping wer e . forced to carry a tent, cots,. blanket . cookingutensils and cvc;n portable fireplace s. Their cars. loaded with this duffel, resembled the covered wagons of the forty-n_iners. After driving perhap <> 300 miles during the day, the motori st s had to allot at least two hour:; to tlw strenuou s effort of making camp. " Cabin Camps Make Power of Chevrolet Due Touring Enjoyable;·· to Short Stroke Engine . An explanation of the power found in Popular Favor the new Chevrolet six is made bv Jar:nes M. ~rawford, recently appointed chtef engmeer of Chevrolet Motor company. "The abundance of power found in the t~ew Chevrolet six is made possible by 1ts short stroke engine design which embod.ies an advanced method of cooling," he said. "The construction brings water around both inlet and exhaust valve seats. It differs radically from the Siamese system of valve . ports, and makes for greater durabthty of the valve train. . "In starting off any new engine de~ stgn, one of the early considerations is how long shall the motor be in order to lay out the chassis into which it mu st fit. On account of the importance of wheel base, it is desirable to 111 keep the motor length down to a minimum. This is one of the conditions which has brought the small bore, long stroke, high speed engine into the picture. "Durability being one of our first requirements, we did not feel that we should shorten the engine to meet a certain wheel base. We chose, rather, to design a motor of the short stroke and medium bore type. In order to insure round cvlinders, we decided to circulate water~ completely around all the bores. Therefore, after the bore was determined the cylinder length was automatically governed by the bore size, and the bore size was determined after taking the stand. that a short stroke, low speed engine was the only way we could insure durability. "This is quite the contrary to the way most engines are laid down, where. cost is an important consideration. This substantial increase in the over~eas demand has brought the export totals to 9.1 1 ercent of the entire factory production and compares. more than favorablv with the export h..nsiness of the American industry as. a whole. European buyers, hedged in. as they are, by almost prohibitive motor taxes and high fuel costs, watch values, operating costs and prices \\·ith extreme care and their approval of Nash measures the extent of an achievement in huilding cars at moderate costs. Germany and Sweden are two of the best Nash overseas markets, although the increased demand for the "400's" was felt in all parts of the world. Reports also showed that the company and its export organization is actively engaged in pushing its frontiers into new territories The Suburban ~ash Company of \Vinnetka is the Nash dealer.
