WlLME'TTE LIFE December 6, 1929 l'or· WIK'l'BB IAI'B'l'Y aad COIO'OB'l' LET US ADJUST OR RELINE YOUR Wind-Driven Rain Test Is New Method of DeSoto A terrific wind-driven rain, natural in every characteristic except source, is the . new method used by the De Soto Motor Corporation as an additional test of the ability of the bodies used on the De Soto to keep out all moisture from the outside elements. This new device is a water-throwing apparatus consisting of a series of pipes in which have been drilled small holes. Through these holes .many streams of water are forced under high pressure. The pipes . are erected and the holes so located that the streams of water are directed onto every part of the automobile body, particularly the doors, windows and windshield crevices and recesses. De Soto bodies are wheeled under this new water-throwing device before mounting on the chassis. The windows, doors and windshield are closed and the body is thoroughly rained on. At the same time a close inspection is made of the interior to finally insure its ability to keep out all moisture. Automobile Tunnel Being Built U nder R iver at Detroit The world's first international automobile tunnel which is being constructed under the Detroit River from Detroit to Windsor, Ont., is a marvel of engineering and ranks with the fa mous Holland Tunnel connecting New York city and Jersey City and th e George A. Posey Tunnel, connecting Oakland and Alameda, Cal. . The Detroit Tunnel has a roadway of twenty-two feet and an estimated capacity of 1,000 vehicles an hour 1n either direction, being limited to thi s number by the formalities of custom s rel,!'ulations. The tube is 5,135 feet from portal to portal and 5,485 feet from street grade to street grade. It is forty-five fett below the channel water level. .In this tunnel, new problems of ai r purification have been conquered. A fresh air duct extends under the floor section with the foul air duct between the ceiling slab and the roof of :he tunnel throughout the greater length . At the outer sections of the tunnel, both fre sh and vitiated air are earne d in passageways above the roadway, th e fresh air being Jed from its passageways down .the sidewalks and released from the tunnel near the roadway level. In th e ventilating building at each end of the tunnel will be twelve giant fan s, six of the blower type and ~ix of th e ex hau st type. The fr esh air is pumped into the tunnel and emitted alongs id e the roadwa y at about th e level of the ordinary automobil e ?xhaust . S uction fan s operating- through the upp er duct draw th e foul air in throug h openings in the ceilin g sla bs. Approximately one million cubic feet of air will be required a minute unde r maximum operating- co nditions and a compl et e change will be made in ninety seconds. The power layout is so arranged that any part of the equipment may be operated from either the American or Canadian side, obviating any likelihood of a power breakdown. Wright, pre sident of the New York State Automobile Association, has promulgated a valuable slogan: "Make every driver safetyconscious." "Our position," says Mr. Wright, "carries the responsibility to lead in the development of greater highway safety. We have gone far toward barring the irresponsible and wilfully reckless driver from the highways-we must now seek to make every driver safetyconscious. He must be taught that accidents can be avoided; that he personally shares the responsibility to stop the ever-increasing accident rate: that no reason justifies taking a chance." Models Brake, Accelerator Pedals Made One by Invention A new control pedal has been put on the market in Newcastle-on-Tync, England. It does away with the accelerator pedal and the present type of brake pedal, replacing the latter with a rocker pedal that functions both for acceleration and braking. Acceler~ tion is obtained by rocking the pedal to the required degree. Braking action is secured by pressing · the pedal forward in the usual way. Regardless of whether the engine is idling or running at full speed, the forward pressure of the foot will close the throttle and apply the brakes. ~,500,000 carloads.
