January 10, 1930 WILMETTE LIFE NEW TRIER DEBATERS \ Christian Science GIRD FOR N. U. FROSH I · ____c_h_ur_ch_es_~ Meet University Yearlinga on March 14; Morton and Proviso Later in Month The New Trier ·High school debating squad is holding practices three times a week under the direction of Chester E. MacLean, debate coach, in preparation for a debate with the Northwestern university freshmen on March 14 with the dual debates with two Suburban l~ague schools, Morton of Cicero and Proviso of Maywood. Coach MacLean announced a final selection of affirmative and negative speakers on the debating squad this week. Names Affirmative Squad The entire affirmative squad has had no previous interscholastic debating experience. Allen Philbrick is captain. The other affirmative speakers are Paul Hoskins, Bill Horsting, who has had some local debating experience as a member of the Gavel club at New Trier, and Helen Bosley, who was a member of the Wranglers, former girls' ·debating organization. Four of the six students who arc members of the debating squad as ne~ative speakers have had one year of interscholastic debating experience. They are: Lowell Comee, Lois Goldstein, Albert Denton, and John Curtis, an alternate on the New Trier team last year. Denton is captain of the negative debaters this year. Two other members of the negative sq uad, Jack Loeb and Dorothy Schoenfield, have debated as members· of New Trier forensic organizations. Appear at Least Once Coach MacLean stated this week that every member of the debating squad will have an opportunity to appear in at least one interscholastic debate. Th e teams that will represent New Trier in each of the debates will be announced later. The clash with Northwestern university freshman on March 14 is holding the attention of the New Trier debaters, since John Erickson, who debated for New Trier two years, is a member of the Northwestern freshman team this year. In the Northwestern debate, New Trier will defend the negative side of the chain store question . The debaters with Morton and Proviso High schools are also to be held in March. Whether or not a New Trier team will make the trip to Cleveland this year to debate the Cleveland Heights High school depends on the financing of such a trip. "God" was the subject of the lesson~ in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, January 5. The golden text was, "Who is so great a God as our God?" (Psalms 77 :13). Among the citations which comprised the lesson-sermon was the following from the Bible : "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth" (Psalms 145: 3, 13, 18). The lesson-sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Ke.y to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is. Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, combine as one,-and are the Scriptural names for God. All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God" (p. 275). sermo~ IT'S A RARE·EVENT This sale of REMNANTS in Carpets and Linoleums The largest selling of such remnants ever held in Ev· anston-and it is being fully LINOLEUM8 CARPETS patronized and appreciated.
