Sunset Ridge and Winnetka, »n heqaf- ing round o! the National Amateur charnpionship -at Onwentsia. Facin9g the torrid .heat and a southwest gale that averaged :fifty mÉiles, ant hour, Westland, had the best control ovee >his balland bis two rounds of 76 an'd 74 were a, magnificent exhibition of- how golf should be played. Westland was hitting the bahl in rare> formn, his wooden club play was marvelous and *is only mistake off the tee came at the start of bis 'second round when he sliced bis drive out o! bounds and took a 6 on the par 5 first hole. White many of the boys.-were wilcl as hatters and were forced to play re-1 covery shots from spots on the On-1 wentsia course hitherto unvisited !)y1 golf halls ' Jack was right down tbe1 middle o! the fairway and bis fine1 long game, coupled with splendid1 putting put hlm out in front o! bis fiéld. Westland learned bhis golf out on tbe Pacific Coast where tbey have plenty o! wind and bis eariy training must have helped him for he did not seem to be bothered by either tbe, wind or the actions o! the larger anc!f ligbter ball that the rest of the con->i testants cusseda plenty.r zi 150 Wfin$ Medmi Under ordinary conditions 150 strokes. for thirty-six holes wouldflot get a player much of anything in a National. Chamnp ons.hip, b:ut 1 50. strokes. at -Onwentsia with the con- ditions what, they were is another matter. Wes-tland's cards were not remarkable as you look at them but try and equal them and, eehow easy it is. Westland played four holes.un-. der par. and his. birdie 2 on the 190 yard fifth bole in the afternoon was what won the medal for, him. Hi-; card shows three 37s and a 39. and he apparently was just playing up to bis average game. When the, other, con,- testants were struggling, Jack was just breezing alongand he won be- cause lie playýed under the least ten-, sion.. :The race for the low medal* honors was a pretty . one. Art-- Sweet, of Ridgenioor, set the'early pace and his 77 for the first tig.hteen holes was.iÔw, for a long time. Then came a couple of 76s and a 75, and John Ames, of, Glen View and Winnetka, finished bis first' round with a 'card of 74 which placed him in the lead at the haif way mark. Ames bad a good chance to *win but bad play at the short fifth hole in. the afternoon put hlm out of the running. On tliis short hole Ames sliced .two iron sliots out of bounds, hooked his third to the left of the green, chipped on, and then three putted for a horrible 7. Westland gaified 5 strokes on the Glen View star right there. Swift la$ Blet C*rd Ira Couch, Jr., of Olen View, played with Chick Evans of Edgewater, and they took most of the gallery witiÉ fhem. Ira is one of the finest golfers in the west and he shot two clever rounds which totaled 151 and gave - him a tie with Decter Cummings, of Onwentsia. Botb of these boys have been friendly rivaIs for. years.and -it is bard to say which is- the, betterj pflayer. Dexter bits a wonderful tee - shot but be is sometimes wild. He ap-- parently had his ganie under controi n the qualifying round and both he and Ira svill bear watching when the natch play starts at Bever y. The big local feature of the weel:. was the annual golf tournament..of th e Minette, Rotary club, and.. what. a time those boys had., Starting with a luncheon at the Shawnee Country club and a bus ride to Nippersink Lodge, the Rotarians and their guesta were busy.every mrninute of the time. They arrived at Nippersink at about 2:30 and lost no ti*me in getting. away from. the.tee. Aided by several lucky breaks,,the writer was able tio turn. in a card. of 79 for the eighteen holes and thiýs*won. thé low gross àprize forý the day. Our foursome was1 compose& of D. W.'Aleshire, G. E. McCollum. Lloyd Hollister and the writer and those boys shoot, golf.. Ail the way ta the club the boys kidded Hollister on hjs slice and he proceeded to show them, the biggest hook the writer has ever seen. Aleshire got away, toai slow start but he finished with a fiock- of pars and we suggest that "Dutch" play a practice round before the start of the next tournament. Dr. Walter J. Schur .andjosepl.u kutten played the, best golf.of the. members and thýeir cards.o! 87 are. worth talking about. Both 'men are fine golfers who are capable of faster play but each found trouble and it only takes a 6 or 7 tao min a really fine card. Twenty-four Rotarians competed in the tournament but sev- eral carloads came out for dinner and the jRotarian. spirit was ini evidence every min ute of'the'. time.
