Also at that time., there was a deep worn path followmng the line of the lalke shore. This was known as the Green Bay trail. Most old settiers agree thatý it tollowed Clark street, Chicago, to Rose Hill. There it divided, one part taking the route over Ridge avenue. and ýother over, There are at varlous plac~es along the North Shore and on several of the old Indian trailsý, sonie-. urfous trees. These show thatthef were bent at right> angles- when very .oung and later grew uprightagain. They were, bent and tied several feet frorn the ground in the direction of the trail to be followed. As they are large old oaks or elms it is certain that the markinig of the, trail in that wayý Was1 done' more than a century ago. Many of these trail trees can only bc rememnb.ered *by early settlers- and by old p hoto- graphs, because they have died or been cut down.
