They spread the tables three times, with 25 at each table and then had the scripture measure surplus left, {or the next time. Mrs. S. P. Brand called the assem- bly to order. announced the object of the gathering as a “surprise" party; when singing was had, followed by an appropriate prayer by Rev. E. S. Woodring. Her recital will un- doubtedly he the musical event of the season, and will afford our peo- ple an excellent Opportunity to en- joy at home with slight expense what many have sought at great incon- venience and outlay in the city. The admission will be '50 cents, the en- tire proceeds going to the work of the Presbyterian Church. Tuesday evening a young lady of this city was on the streets, calling at several places, about '7 o'clock, when she discovered that she was be- ing followed up by two soldiers from Fort Sheridan. They first crossed her path on Prospect Avenue, then met her as she came out of the Post office and one or two other places, then followed her down Prospect. and up Linden till she reached the Presbyterian Church, when the young lady turned and asked what they meant by following her in such a way. They stammered out some lame apology, thought she was some one else, etc, and left. Such occurr ences as this are an outrage and we once told Senator Redfield Proctor, when he was t‘ Icretary of War, whom we knew very well, that the govern ment should raise the moral staml' ard of its recruits. hy offering}.r induce ments that would call in a higher grade of men.
