The Highland Park Club provid- ed the public with a very superior course of lectures last season at a moderate price. The lectures, as our. readers will remember, were by Prof. writers of our day. as Dickens, Car. lyle, Thackeray. George Eliot, etc, and were unusually interesting. Prof. Rolfe not only selected interesting subjects. but his lectures were very carefully and wisely prepared, and . then best of all they were most ad- ‘ mirably delivered. Anyone who has heard Charles Sumner. Phillips, Carl Schurz. George Will- ium Curtis. and others of their kind’ know what it is to hear a good lec- ture finely delivered. So Prof. Rolfe stood up and looking you pleasantly in the face, talked so entertainingly and instructively for an hour. We all remember how he made the brus- que Carlyle live and move before us; how we saw him in that sound- i I saw . proof upper chamber at work; him when the world‘scongratulations l and praise came in after the French Revolution was published. and so on. Well now this year he takes the stars of our New England writers as Hawthorne. Lowell. Emerson. Long- fellow, etc, and will deal with them as with our “Kin beyond sea.†That we shall all greatly enjoy and proï¬t i by them goes without the saying. 9 ‘ But we have a suggestion.
