The person in question is Captain Grimes of Battery A, 2nd Artillery U. S. A. It. will be remembered that it was this battery which fired the . first shot upon the Spanish position on San Juan hill and thus started the terrible battle there. In speaking . of the battle Captain Grimes said: “Well on the morning preceding . our storming San Juan we had been i stationed at El Paso. about one and i a half miles from the hill. Capt. Capron. who was stationed at El Caney. gave me the signal to besiege the hill. ()n the morning in question 1 we heard the ï¬rst shot upon El Cu- 1 ney and immediately I opened ï¬re on the Spanish. who were fortiï¬ed ; upon the hill. Then began the terrible i battle which you have read so much about. Yes. I had much apprehen- i sion as to my ever getting out alive, i but fortunately Iwas not wounded in the least. “The first day of the fighting it i was not so dangerous. We could see 2 the Spaniards. plainly. ()ii the sec- ond day liim'th'r. the smoke‘ and a i fog were so thick that they had us fairly in a trap and all We could do i was to stay there and let them shoot at us without retaliating as We de- sired." ‘ Capt. [irimes‘ battery is now staâ€" tioned at Huntsville, Alabama. and he has orders to be ready to again ‘ leave for (‘uba not later than Nov. lst. The Captain was formerly lo~ . catcd at Fort Sheridanand frequent~ . ly visited in this city where he, now ‘ has many friends who will be. glad to know that he escaped injury at the hands of the Sigriards and also was not sick at all while on duty in ‘ (‘iiba He will \‘isitin this city for a few days and will then rejoin his command." \Vankcgnn Sun.
