Holmes, on Park avenue. Mr. Holmes was at his desk in the bank, Mrs. Holmes and daughter are still in California, where they have been some Weeks, and no one was in the house. The woman who discovered the fire gave the notice to Mr. Holmes, the steam whistles sounded the public alarm, and the firemen were s‘oon on hand. They found the fire chiefly in the outside walls andattic, and soon had it under control by cutting many holes in the walls and roof. Hose was attached to all the hy drants' m the neighborhood, even up to the H upwell corner. The fire, of course, greatly dam- aged the house, inside“ and outside. and the water added to it. Mr. Holmes had just put'it’ infirst-class éondition by quite eXtensive internal repairs and the electric light wires had just been put in also.
