" ‘ Mr. Bortree told his Sunday school last Lord’s day 'that- he had been in “cold storage. †He attended the Libertyville convention the day be fore, which was enough to make the cold chills run up the spine of an iceberg to see this town misrepre- sented there. We understand some Republicans complain because so many Democrats of the wrong kind ï¬lled the hall that they. Republicans, could not getin. Don’t come to us for sympathy in that. We were there at 7: 40 so as to get a seat and they were then all ï¬lled. Later other Republicans came in and stood up to the rack. At 8: 56 Major 'Vail came, and he got in as did others still later. How urgent Oboe was that the preposterous measure pauâ€" why? That‘a-their achool of politics to throttle free speech and action. But Vail, Baaye and others downed it and saved the town that disgrace. Several. in fact many, people have told us lots of the men in that cau- cua Friday night .were democrats; that they so pached the hall that re publicane could not get in. We can hardly believe that; many democrats whom we know are respectable, hon; eat men, and they would no more help pack a republican caucus than they would steal groceries. Perhaps some are of the other kind and voted, Where is that liter bed ordiaauoe AldermeaGrant and Obee were so anxious to have pamd months ago? The last we knew the mayor had pigeonholed it. Perhaps his sober second thought has asserted itself, and seeing that the people do not want it, he has decided not toput the cityto the‘trouble and expense of a special election to demonstrate what everybody knows to be a fact. That surely would be creditable to his Sagacity and true regard for the city’s best interests. Candidate Stearns has our sympa thy in the unfortunate predicament in which the .way the party caucus here was run has placed him before the citizens of Highland Park. We shall be loath to believe he or his agent here suggested or encouraged anv such action, for it was the Tam- many kind of politics, which all hen- eat men abominate â€"- republit-ans as well as democrata. Mr. Stearne was not Deerï¬eld’b candidate, no matter what the delegates of our Park can- one said, and everybody honors Major Vail for standing for the truth and the honest utterance of the Park’s real sentiments. To pack a caucus and prevent the expression of the actual Lyon sentiments of .the party is not the way t9 win support for Ur. Status, and hence our limpe- thy for him in the misfortune of _ his friend- and their conduct 0! his cem- puign here. Elsewhere we have spoken of the methods by which the caucus was managed last Friday night and our delegation given to a man whom our people do not want. We have criti- cised the Oboe caucus method. But what shall be said of those men who went to a social function in the club house ï¬rstead of to the caucus, and allowed things to go as they did? The night was stormy and some were at home.- Don’ t you scold about the result; part of the sin'lies at your window. Society danced at Brus~ sels the night before the battle of Waterloo and some British ofï¬cers were there, but they did not win the victory next day. Society has its time and place and so has. a caucus and public duty. We underatand that Mayor Cobb and Attorney Knox. those sturdy Republicans, went over to the Lake County Republican convention last Saturday. What for? 'To learn how to run a Democratic convention, or did they go. to help their fellow- iaborers line up in voting for Stearne. What a deep interest the “Combine- tion†had' in that convention, eapec ielly' In Steerne’ euccesa. Why was it thus? Wait and see P. 8. They have no “blind pigs†in Libertyville. Everything has two eyes Ind is wide open over there. We hive been asked our opinion" on stereoptieon erhibite in churches; are they right, etc. W,ell why not.
