. . A Par-allot. ln‘the article of the last week’s. issue oi the Ntws-Lmn headed, “la the Mayor. One or Three," we criticised the mayor’s decision' on the matter, of public printing. We' ï¬nd a parallel to our complaint'in the municipal aflairs of our sister city Evanston. and, by the way, it might be interesting and instructive to the people of Highland Park in- stead of hurrying through the filter- bed to watch the investigations be- ing made in a city several times larger than Our own and where am - questionably there are some stronger reasons for needing a ï¬lter than in Highland Park. But, bethat as it may, the main point just now is the decision of Mayor Bates on the vote of last Tuesday night in the Evans- tan council, which stood 7 to 6 in favor of the installation of the Wormser Filter Plate Company’s'ï¬l- . tors in the private residences of their city. The whole number of alder- ‘men elected in Evanston iii-fourteen, but Alderman Ryan .0! the ï¬fth ward died, leaving only thirteen members. The mayor decided the abovehmentioned vote as carried, just as in the recent case in our council where the vote stood a tie on a similar question, and Mayor Cobb gave the casting vote. The people of Evans- ton at once made a very vigOrous protest against the mayor’s ruling, and incidentally against the ï¬lter question. _ We understand that’Mayor Bates has called a special. meeting, and has announced that he will veto the resolution on the ground that he ,was in error in , his decision, the de. cis‘ion being not only contrary to the statutes of Illinois, as We suggested in last week’s" issue, :but had also been decided adversely by the su-_ preme court of the state. We as- sume that our own mayor will be equally broad [minded and frankly admit that he was in error. .“To err is hnm'anï¬dbut to persist in error may be in‘ some cases, even criminal.
