' He believes the church not only needs such s service but that it cannot do its full, heaven appointed vvork in this community without it. Hence last Sunday evening that service which has been for many months. in a state of in- nocuous desuetude was revived and with encourageing results. The church will decide by its. treatment of this service whether it wishes it continued. and we believe that de- cision will have very much to do with the future prosperity of the church. ' When the proposition came up to have the evening sermon or presch- ing service revived the question netunlly arose. is it worth while or will it pay; that is does preaching pay, for it is II distinctively, though not exclusively, II preaching service; that is the sermon, the presche'rs message, is to be the distinguishing feature of the evening. In sane churches the sermon is never the distinguishing future, it is the ser- vice, or the music or something else; the sermon, briel, the more pointless the better, is n secondsry'mstter. Hence our questions today, does preaching pay? Before answering, however briefly this question, we should understand what is meant by preaching. Is it anything and everything which a man utters in the pulpit? Ohlno. Preaching. as we understand. is the delivery of God‘s message that is the utterance of God’s truth as given in Holy Scriptures. “Go preach the preach ing that I bid thes"is God’s com. mand Well, what does he say is to beprsached? “Preach the Word.†Now such preaching is notessay writing, or lecturing, or saying about religion, or the Word at Jesus Christ. Real preaching is roiceing God’s truth, not in science or poetry or literature but as contained in his word. The preacher Is to stand up in his pulpit and God’s truth or word as revealed in the Bible is to have voice or utterance through him: he speaks as he is moved by the Holy Spirit, that is preaching, all else isa travesty of preaching. It is mere sham, wukness and Ive may almost curse of the modern pul- pit that instead of clean, unadulter- ated, bold fearless preaching of the gospel it is buslud delivering essays on religious topics, or semi- religious themes. or politics thinly veiled un der a religious garb, or discourses on biblical criticism, high or low, or oftener neither. As we said at the outset. Prof. Whyte believes preaching the gospel Sunday evenings in Highland Park will pay. Is no right? One thing seems sure, if it will pay to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ anywhere it will pay in Highland Park. The Park is as good a ï¬eld for preaching the gospel as Chicago or. Vermont or China; no better and no worse. Tem- porary conditions may var , but the essentialleonditions are Ike every- where, irrespective of the - civilian. tion. cnltmie' or environment.
