OUR m LIBRARY. An hour spent a few days ago looking over the reference books recently added to our public li- brary disclosed the fact that the board has done admirably. The selections have been made with good judgment. They, have, for instance, the Century Dictionary and Atlas, which is up to date, and is a very superior work: We have the London Times Atlas. which has been compared with this in the library. One thing about the Century Atlas; it is not overloaded with names of obscure places, so that the important names stand out, Then there is Haydn’s‘Diotionary of Dates, an invalnable book of reference. They have the Putnam edition. ours is the Harpers, both the same size. One of the first books we put in our little library, was the old Haydn's, in 1857. with Prof. Oscar‘Fay Adam’s Dictionary of American Authors and Lippincott's Pronouncing Biographical Dictionary, so if you do not know how to pro- nounce the' name of. that old Russian writer, Tolstoi. go there and see for yourself. We once heard it,“ “Toluck.” The one lack in this-Waco“ dictionary is that the exact date, day and month, of person’s births and deaths are not given. For in- stance, Francis Parkman was born in Boston in 1823. Why not the month and day? How do you pronounce Virchow’s name? See how it is in Lippencott book. But one of the best set of books is Hasting’s Bible Dictionary in four volumes, at 86 per volume, and they are worth it. It is an up-to-dste work in every respect; all the “higher criticism" ye want, and packed full of condensed and valuable learning, and we want to thank Rector Walcott for putting it there. There is one more book for 'men and boys of a practical scientific turn, a Cyclopedia of Recipes, compiled from the Scientific American. The same folks, Munn Co, published an- other volume we want to see in there, a resume of the discoveries, etc. of the nineteenth century, by first class men. We are pleased with and proud of these new ad- ditions to our library.
