Serial Firm-The two-story frame building which was situated at Park and Railroad avenues was practically de- stroyed (wire on Mmdey at 2 a. in. while the residents were cot-id asleep. It happened providentinlly tint the peo- ple were saved. A young man living h Winneth was coming in from Chicago and fell asleep on the car, but did not wake up until he arrived at Ravinia Park. Asthelutcarludpaued.» walked back to Glencoeyvith the ex- pectation of lind'ng lodging. He noticed the place was the and woke the in- habitants. who barely had a chance to escape death by fire. The inhabitants were Italian, 1 untried couple, the man managing the store for the proprietor. Mr. V Bartollati, and several young men boarders. One young- man who had escaped thought he had a chance to save some things and ventured into the burn- ing building. The heat of the floor burned his feet. While he was trying to secure things the ï¬re cut of! all means of escape in he threw a mattress out of the win- dow and jumped from the second story; thereby saving his life. The loss was estimated at several thousand dollars, as the owner, Mrs. Legar, had no insurance upon her property. The building was burned beyond repair and the city ofli- cials ordered it razed to the ground on Wednesday. Nothing but the clothes the people managed to grab as they'left the building were saved. Mr. V. Bar- tollati, the proprietor of the fruit store. had $1,900 insurante upon his stock. Over $350 in cash was lost in the ï¬re. The cause of the ï¬re is unknown, but froin the direction of the ï¬re it is known to have started in the southeast corner of the building. The probabilities are that one of the young men who loiter and sit at' that part of the building threw_ a lighted cigar stub which was overlooked and thereby set the house aï¬re. ' .
