For- i tunately for those who tight this moth. ‘ the e“ masses and cocoons are quite ‘ conspicuous and easy to scrape on. The female moth is practically wing- less and has to crawl up tree trunks to find suitable places to deposit the egg masses. A simple obstacle like a band of cotton batting ticd around a tree trunk will arrest her progress‘ or that o! the cnterpillar and thus cocoons and egg masses will be deâ€" posited below the band where they. can conveniently he collected and destroyed. it is the best current! practice in areas where the tussock moth has become numerous to band trees in the way described or to scrape a smooth hand round a tree trunk and smear it with tanglefoot dolution, However, as pointed out by ‘Professor Forbes in the Bulletin named above and confirmed by an opinion recently given the City Beau- tiful Commission by Mr. Jamst. the landscape engineer in the employ of' the South Park e-(‘ommissioners in .(‘hicazm the main reliance is in Iwrapping off cocoons and egg mass- ‘es and burning them. Spraying is very difficult and of doubtiul utility :after the caterpillars have hatched out an scattered over the trees. They feed on the under side of the leaves out of direct reach of the spray. Be- sides that. as pointed out by Mr. Jnmst. the caterpillars recoil in- stinctively from contact with a pois- on area and will abandon such areas {or uncontaminated spots. \\' MIN-1| \Vaullml (“mun mt hun- r'n-f~. .‘ 7 l’rmpovt Aw “'aunml ‘ .tl huuw t~. h- pvr L'AIIH‘, m- tn. The tus.<m~k moth appears in two and sometimes three genera- tions during one season. It is hoped that the prmeut generation here is the final one of the season and that the eggs that have been deposited of late would not hatch until next wring. This would make it possible to continue the warfare upon this post in Highland Park during the coming winter months.
