I The first request for” iumi< to pro-‘ vide for the local war‘ activities In» dertaken by the Council was made in June. l‘Jl7 the organization of the Council being in pursuance to in- structions from Wathington. D. C.. through Mayor Hastings. The money collected under this call was used largely to cover the expense of the July Fourth celebration and the ur- gent work undertaken by the eight separate committees of the Council. The second call 01‘ the Finance Committee was in September when an effort was made to correlate all local war activities into one financial ”stem and avoid multiplicity of so- licitations. The amounts contributed have been itemized in order to ap- pear in the records. and can be i‘ound under dates receivedâ€"the names of contributors appearing two or more times according to payments made. Many letters have been received expressing heany approval of the work of the Council. it is the in- tention of the Council to set aside in a separate. fund from 10% to 20% 0! the amounts received to pro- vide for the care of the needy fam- ilies of those who heve gone to the war. The Council has gladly )ulnml with Lake Forest 1n the Colnnvl’x Fund at Fort Sheridan and our help in this direction has been greatly appreciat- ed. The Council has also joined with Lake Forest in placing a woman to look after lhc- moral Ululdltliflli at Highwood. The Army and Navy Comer has been well patronized and proved - worthy undvrmking. Several public meetings hzuu been held and large audiences wvrv pres- ent. and the expense for same reduc~ ed to a nominal amount.
