PAGE EIGHT câ€":~:~xwooooocax>ooc>cooob As near as we can come to it about 298 years ago a few Pilgrims celebrated their first Harvest on the American Continent. They set aside a day to offer up thanks for the little they managed to raise on the pri- mitive fields and what the forest supplied them with. And so the spirit of thanksgiv- ing was instilled into the soul of this great nation by our forefathers. Today this spirit still prevailsâ€"in fact the last Thursday in November has become one of the three great Holy Days of the year. .\'or have we ever had more cause for celebrating Thanksgiving than this year. for in spite of all the unrest in the world. ours is a land of plenty compared with others. True. there are some who look upon the blessings bestowed as a sort of natural birth right, and they can't appreciate how fortu- nate we are; but the great mass of our one hundred million of people realize the full meaning‘of Thanksgiving Day and so it should. and no doubt always be as we go on. While in olden times the Prayer Meeting Titanésgiving on Thanksgiving morning was followed by the Feast which lasted for the rest of the day. the, great hand of progress has drawn a veil of modernism ovei‘éall and the table filled up with food IS no longer the main at- tractionâ€"it is neatly set’ jtastily arranged and decorated with Fl OW ERS. What could add moré to the spirit of Thanksgiving than Flowers ?What express- es it better? Celebi ate the day as it should be, there ever was a time when Flowers played a more important part in our daily lives than right nowâ€"use them in your home today, tomorrow and the next dayâ€"consider them necessities rather than luxuries at least for Thanksgiving. Henry Ward Beecher said “Flowers are the sweetest things God ever created and forgot to put soul into"â€"it takes sunshine to create them but we often overlook that Flowers again create sunshine and cheer in return. That is what we need today, that kind of sunshine, kind thoughts and deeds. Think of all the unfortunate boys in Fort Sheridan, friends in sick rooms or those with heavy hearts elsewhere.
