‘ ”“th Sit-v! The Highlanb Path Presgw M ed zer \\ MI.- Mbert Levy Pubhshed weekly by JOHN I Park, Entered as second class matter March 1. 1911, at Highland Park, Illinois, under the Act of March 3. 1879. N1] “HER The desire of the average person to obtain sometumg nu nothing: is at the. bottom of all the swindling and shady financial transactions of this and other days and of the stock gambling, poker games. race track bettingcr and other get rich {wick schemes whereby fools and their money are parted. The accumulation of an honest competency by the practice of industry. economy and saving, does not appeal to the imagina- tion of the men and women who want to be rich tomorrow and who haw no patience with "the sweet simplicity of the six per cenh” to slightly improve the time honored phrase. Mr. Barnum was an astute student of human nature and he was perfectly right when he said that the public likes to lie humâ€" v. .,-.-i.,: m,i thurn :iro Hl\VaV.\' cleVei' persons who are oliliging Mr. Barnum Was an astute stuuent or nur was perfectly right when he said that the pub! hugged. and there are always cleVer persons enuugh In humhutr them. There are the pmmoters who practice the something»r they haven’t got In people whu ( there are financiers like. Mr. Punzi of Buster PAGE SIX rs who practice the fine art of selling something they haven’t got to people who don't want it, and there are financiers like Mr. Ponzi of Boston who promised to investors the modest return of fifty per cent in florty five days on their investments and who paid it to those who were for- tunate enough to be among the early patrons._ The scheme is a simple one, one has only to pay out at one window as interâ€" est the money that is taken in at another window for invest- ment and as long as the rush of investors continues the scheme works, and it usually happens that the financier gets away with a handsome profit before the authorities break uplthe game. but in Mr. Ponzi's case the law was too prompt in its action and Mr. Ponzi languishes in a prison cell. while his dupes. whose invest- ments had not matured, are sadder and wiser men. Those who profited by the Ponzi swindle in its earlier stages are morally receivers of stolen goods since what they gained others lost. and now the Attorney General of Massachusetts is said to be considering legal action whereby theseiprofiteers will be dealt with as accessories to a fraud and made to disgorge There are the promote their profits and share pro rata the losses with thelother partners in the enterprise. One cannot feel very sorry for people who are ‘greedy enough to put their money into such a scheme and lose it. the moral obliquity of the transaction probably never occurred to them. any more than it occurs to people who defraud the customs or who buy goods at a price so much below their value as to show ,that there is something crooked about the deal, but it is well to give prominence to this aspect of the case and to point out the obvious moral that no man can honestly get something for nothing and that there are other Ways of stealing beside snatch- ing pennies from blind beggars: ’ - ll'nlii .Vlllill\‘>UHl w IIK‘IC relatives. mu 'Hiursuay ispent ”)0 Mrs. Robert (li'eeiislade had as her ‘guests \\'i-«liii-siliiy.
