it 6 £} iL i8 t "Heart Day" receipts when checked up by Miss Gemma Lichtenstein and Miss Edna Mount, who took charge of the Volunteers of America heart tag day held here jlast Saturday, totaled the: generous sum of $219.04, Highland Park‘s gift the destitute[ women with children care of thati institution. Every one connected witb( the enterprise was w@ll pleased and grateful to all who in anyway con-[ tributed toward the d:y’s success, _ | To the grade children must be given credit for the day‘s work. From early in the morning until late in the afternoon each of the,25 youngsters worked. At the close |jof the contest Local Collection Is Successful; 25 School Children Earn + Prizes Saturday $219.04 CONTRIBUTED TO VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA Because of the unexpected large atâ€" tendance which exceeded the most opâ€" timistic previous estimate, many perâ€" sons were unable to reach the scene of the opening céremonies owing to lack of â€"transportation. _ The ;. four buses furnished by the North Shore Line did yeoman service in hauling Highland Park people to > Deerfield, but 10 buses could hardly have hanâ€"| dled the crowd, and the committee | fully appreciates the efforts of the| drivers of the buses furnished. . The | courtesy of the North Shore Line in | providing these fine vehicles for the | occasion also is greatly appretiated| by the committee, which takes this opâ€" portunity to thank heartily: all who helped to make the celébration so sucâ€" cessful, and the committee also re-i grets exceedingly that it was imposâ€"| sible to take everybody to the scene| of the ceremonies. ; i { Credit for the success of the affair is due the committees from both towns, the members of which spent considerable time and effort in the preparations. These _ committees were â€" Romayne Stryker, Theodore Knaak and A. J. Ender, representing Deerfield; Paul L. Udell, William Reay and Charles I. Harbaugh, represâ€" enting the city of Highland (Park, and Frank Sheahen, Henry G. Winâ€" ter and L. R. Rigdon, representing the Business Men‘s association. h PAGE TWELVE In behalft of Déerfield I . am pleased‘ to welcome, you all, and hope that you may be with us often. The band played and the program was finished. The remainder of the evening was) spent in dancing on the new paveâ€"| ment, which had been prepared forf this purpose and illuminated by hunâ€"} dreds of electric lights strung across the road. A very pleasant time was thus enjoyed by the large number| which participated. | Great Sugcess The entire celebration was carried out as announced and proved a great success, the public spirit shown by the many who participated ‘being a notaâ€" ble feature ‘of the gathering, and all who attended were impressed with the neighborly feeling shown and the interest taken by the: people of both cities and townships in the joint celeâ€" bration. DEERFIELD HIGHWAY OPENING A SUCCESS With both steam | and electric transportation so close to us, it is only natural that the people of Deerfield and â€" surrounding â€" terriâ€" territory will be brought more and more to Highland Park to take adâ€" vantage of this and other conâ€" veniences. Among these are Deerâ€" fieldâ€"Shields high school, the Highâ€" land Park hospital, ‘and as fine a beach as there is along the Lake Michigan: shore. I Modern stores and the facilities for transacting all kinds of busiâ€" ness, are~more than a conveni¢ence, they are quite necessary. . Without business this road could not have been built. And Highland Park and Deerfield may feel grateâ€" ful that this long : needed highway has been.completed. { Deerfield is very fortunate. in beâ€" ing so closely linked to Highland Park as our water supply comes from the Higrhlnmji Park system, and the quality of this is much betâ€" ter than the average water supply pumped from Lake Michigan. And we are very fortunate indeed to be able to secute this water. The opening of this road means a great deal to Deerfleld, as it is now only about 10 or 12 minutes from Deerfleld to: a city whose transportation system is probably unexcelled. ; : These and many | more â€" things could be mentioned ias attractions which Highland Park can boast of. before me, and it is . with |this thought in mind that we welcome our Highland Park neighbors, in commemorating the opening of anâ€" other link that bring: us still closer together. piput * Is stol And we are hoping that as Deerâ€" field grows Highlang Park will be able to tare for our increasing needs. {Continued from page 1) or ?% program ; Saturda%’n night, ‘tTosca," with.
