From Ancient mes and Races . Perhaps the most distinctly Ameriâ€" van type of painting in the present exhibition of American paintings and sculpture at the Art institute, is the workoftfiwxroupo!mcnlmown as the Taos school of painters. Taos is a Hopi Indian village in New Mexico, some distance away from the railâ€" road and in this village and among its picturesque mountain â€" surroundings there lives a yery interesting tribe of Indians whose ancestry dates back to the remote Astecs.© heoee They are truly 100 per cent Ameriâ€" cans. Many Chicago painters have acquired studios in Taos and several of them are represented in the present exhibition. E. Martin Hennings shows Victor Higgins exhibits an unusual painting entitled "A New Mexican C;lvary." Barren, round, yellow ioot-‘ hills; groups of Indians winding down. through the coulees; a road winding tothetopo‘lflwhichuthm;qn.thh,‘ showing very small in the great disâ€" tance, three crosses. In some of the Indian districts of the southwest, the Indians crucify one of their number on certain occasions. Mr. Higgins is not here to inform us just how realistic is his present painting. y Other Paintings Oscar E. Beringhaus has a. canvas that in color and arrangement of masses suggests Leon Gaspard. There is the same accurate painting, the same use of brilliant spots of red, blue, and green, but the drawing is much more detailed than Gaspard‘s. It is called "Fiesta; San Juan, New Mexico." Catherine Carter Critcher shows two paintings, "Taos Indian" and â€" "Indian Family," which are character studies of the natives. B. J. 0. Nordfeldt shows an actual cifixion scene among the New Mexico Penitentes. It is said these 8 lar. natives actually nail to the cross ‘a member of their tribe and w hhfi\ to hang there for six hours. If&he survives the ordeal he is perâ€" mitted to live. "Eagle Wing Fan" is the ‘euphonious title E. L. Blumenâ€" schein bestows on his painting of an Indian brave. & .Frhe five largest electric signs on Broadway, New York, contain 36,000 Mazdo lamps, more than the number used in the entire United States in 1881. They, however, consume only oneâ€"fourth as much electric current, and give twice the volume of light as the lamps in the nation in 1881. 1881 IN AMERICA â€" AND NOW W Tel. 410 60 N. First 8t. J.
