It is from the unnecessary blindness in ‘inâ€" fants and children of school age that over oneâ€"half© of the present blindâ€" ness in this country has been recruited â€"â€"this is an appalling and tragic fact, since there are at present over one hundred thousand blind in this counâ€" try, such a fact constitutes a chalâ€" lenge to an age which emphasizes the possibility of preventive measures ¢c:ld which gives much attention to ghild welfare activities. The record of this sotiety in the ten years of its service demonstrates that preventive medicine is effective in greatly reducing the amount of unnecessary blindness to infants and inconserving good eyeâ€" gight in: school children by early atâ€" tention to defects and to serious eye ailments. One of the measures estabâ€" lNished for conservation of sight in schook :;ildnn with | unimprovable eye defects is the Sight Saving class in the schools where visual defects are no bar to regular educational work because all the facilities of the school ~room are adapted to relief from eye strainâ€"that Chicago has esâ€" tablished fourteen of these classes in a variety of school buildings within the last three years is an evidence of the practical value of special courses for all children with visual hadicaps.
