In drawâ€" ing him we can fairly see Mr. Lewis licking his lips with satisfaction as he piles on one more vitriolic adjecâ€" pages of fiction ing him we can licking his lips he piles on one It seems to me very much the kind of book that the author of "Babbitt" and "Arrowsmith," books which have years of study and grilling work in them might write for his own and others‘ amusement while the more serious part of his mind lay fallow He throws it out as a little thing, an incident in his writing life as it was an incident in the actual life of Ralph Prescott. Yet he cannot help using. for they are his tools, his acâ€" customed irony and clearity and inâ€" sight. To many, who, liking Mr. Lewis‘ recent works, were the first to read it, it probably seemed a rather poor effort fro mthe pen: which could write "Arrowsmith" and "Babbitt." Some of them will call it a "potâ€" boiler;" others an attempt at a "thrillâ€" er." Mr. Lewis has‘now kindly come forward and explained what he calls it himself, so everyone is welcome to keep his own opinion. "Something different" was the preâ€" publication comment by its publishers on "Mantrap," the latest book of Mr. Sinclair Lewis. The "something difâ€" ferent" has probably been echoed by each of its readers, but cach time with a different inflection. imnlving another definition of the word "differâ€" ent." Colonel House, with his accustomed modesty, has come forward and adâ€" mitted that he is the author of the novel, "Philip Dru. "Administrator," some years ago. It is being reissued this fall. The final volume of the incomparâ€" able works of Anatole France was brought out the last of June by Dodd Mead and Company, under the title, "Under the Rose." It is the book on which the great author was working at the time of his death. A portrait of John Galsworthy has been presented by Mr. and Mrs. Cyâ€" rus McCormick to the Chicago Art Institute. The portrait, which is by Randall Davey, the American painter, will hang in the Memorial Hall of the Goodman Theatre. "Coldnel Bankspark =. . . says that he was immensly pleased with the powder works on the Hudson, and though he had not yet seen the powder works on the Potomac he was convinced that they were just as delightful. _ The colonel, whose sojourn in our country is to last for some weeks, will shortâ€" ly leave New York to visit the powder works at South Chicago. He is acâ€" companied on his journey by his wife and little daughter, both of whom he expects will be blown up in the Next War. ‘ Let me close quickly before I quote the entire book by saying that we are informed that the French cabinet "is working out a plan for wiping out the whole debt of France by borrowing it from England." from her charms, offers that means, and we. whirl into a swift melodrama | of faithless Indian guide, fore;!t fire, | rescuing aeroplane. Of course there ; are the usual twists and turns with | which Mr. Lewis would have to grace | the most, trite incidents, moving to a " slightly indeterminate ending. Under "Brotherly Love Among the Nations," Mr. Leacock makes some pertinent reflections on the manner in which Americans go to England and â€"after a stay of two hoursâ€"give out In "Winnowed Wisdom" Mr. Leaâ€" cock has, delivered himself on various topics of the day, Shakespeare is given an incomparable "Outline," be genning, "Life of Shakespeare. We do not know where he was born. But he is dead." From this concrete beginâ€" ning we are given a resume of his life, works, style and personal apâ€" ncarance. The Outline of Evolution is "specially devised to swit everybody, and particularly for the schools of Tennessee." We will all agree that Stephen Leaâ€" cock is a humorist. And most of us will agree that he is a humorous one,.
