TWO KINDS (I BERMrN ing Public; it same for "PARK Puss. maxim PARK. ILLINOIS The ignitor is equipped with a pair of interruptor points, one fixed and the other movable. The movable one is operated by a cam which is driven through suitable gearing by the crank shaft of the engine. The spark is ob. tainable by. bringing the movable point in contact with the fixed point and then separating the points. The spark occurs as the points separate. How It Operates The ignitor also has a distributor which directs the spark to the differ- ent cylinders in the proper order of their firing, To provide for changing the time at which the sparks occur in the cylinders, the ignitor itrnrrantted so that the interruptor points may be made to open earlier or later in the stroke of the piston. This action is called advancing and retarding the spark. It is, controlled by the opera- tor through a small device called the ton moves back in to compress it and the pressure of the explosion forces it out again. It the spark should oe- cur while the piston was moving into the cylinder on' the compression stroke, the gas would be ignited and a pressure generated that would force the piston back out of the cylinder before the crank had reached and passed the dead center point. This could cause the engine to kick back. This is especially true if the engine is running slowly. Should it be run- ning at a high rate of speed there might be tsuiBeient power stored in the flywheel to overcome this back pres- sure. Thus the engine would run in the proper direction although with loss of power. If the' spark occurs after the gas has been compressed and the piston hasstarted to travel out of the cylin- der and the power stroke has been partly completed this will also de. crease the power delivered by the en- gine. Most of such loss consists of unburned gas which goes out through the exhaust valve and completes its burning in the muffler. T Particular Point There is a particular point in the travel of the piston where the spark should occur in order to give the best results. This point changes as the engine speed changes. In order that the spark may occur at the propels time in each cylinder an ignitor or ig- nition timing device is provided. , When Starting Engine When starting the engine this lever should be placed in the retard posi- tion to insure the spark occurring after the crank has passed the top head center and the piston is rmuifto travel out on the power stroke. As soon as the engine attains speed this shark lever should he advanced ao that the mark will occur early enough to eat the are; burning and produce the full pressure at the beginning of the power stroke. F . upgrk levtr. (By B. Cliiford Brokaw) . . Ignition, compression end cu in the cylinders ere required to stert so sotornohiie engine. The first of these is obtained by mesh: of, en electric spark. The carburetor receives the gesoline from the fuel tank, veporius it end mixes it with sir to provide the oxygen necessery for rapid coma bastion. This mixture is drown into the cylinder end compressed for the purpose of inereaaintr the power. This compressed chsrge is ignited. As it burns heat is genersted which given I high pressure on the inside of the cylinder, forcing the piston out and turnfntthe crank shaft which drives the auto. To secure the most effieient operation of the engine the spark should give the maximum pressure in the cylinder when the piston is in the beat position for turning it into use- ful work. . Drawn Into Cylinder T The gas is drawn into the cylinder by the piston moving out. The pie lt will be understood that the Rais 'umites and bum very rapidly so that the explosion would seem to be in- stantaneous. However, there is 1 fraction of a second consumed in get- ting the gas fully lmited. The pin- ton of the fast running engine would travel several inches in this time. Amount of Goa In Addition to the weed of the mo- tor the amount of m beine fed to it affects the position " which the snark ‘hould occur. The greater the quan- titv ‘of was into the cvlinder the more retarded the spark should be. It in well to experiment with the spark ad. ,raneeHever. Advnnce it to n point where the engine knocks. indicntinz loss of power, then retard it just enough to remove the knocking. Because present day battery igni- tion systems- require a wide range of advance and retard to‘cover all run- ine conditions. an nutomatic mark " vancing mechanism in madly 'pro- vided. This in onented by the engine in addition to the hand merit lever. This device makes it unnecessary to keep shifting the land lever for each change in engine speed.
